I have received clarification from the KEM Outlands. IN THE OUTLANDS we are allowed to teach and use techniques that are legal for use in the lists. Techniques that are not legal in SCA combat cannot be taught, period. So, in the case of the I.33 this would mean that the two sword grabbing technique...

Can you grab a madu?

I know you can't grab the shield itself, but can you grab the rattan shaft that extends top and bottom? Is that considered shield or weapon?
