Coming late to this thread because I have been mostly offline for the past week. The Marshallate is screwed by poorly written rules. They are made responsible for *ALL* martial arts activity in the SCA (see Corpora, description of the duties of the Kingdom Earl Marshals) and told that if they deviat...

If your rules allow it: Use a buckler. While he's holding that sword out in front, grab the end of his blade with your left-hand. Hit or thrust him anywhere you choose. Alternately: Swing big at him so that he *must* block your blow. Run in and thrust at his face. If he sets the thrust aside, you're...

Hmmm... According to the rules we are supposed to aknowledge blows as if we were wearing the same type of armor, regardless of what type of armor we actually happen to be wearing. So if our armor causes blows that would have landed good (if we were actually wearing the assumed armor standard) to gla...

Great question. I've been wondering something similar myself. Some possibilities: 1) Evolution of artwork. It was customary for earlier artwork to depict well-known events. As the jousts were undertaken as a private enterprise by each combatant, the horse belongs to the victor of the second joust. So why does the loser of the first joust lay claim to the horse? One possible answer: If the horse had been lost in battle, then matters would have been somewhat different. I...

I don't know if that had a name, but it's probably a duelling weapon. There are descriptions and illustrations of this sort of 'left-handed can-opener' from the late 14th Century on. Whatever their actual design, their main advantage seems to have been that the opponent would be unfamiliar with thei...

Gavin, You make a number of excellent points that I fully agree with. I disagree with your primary assertion, however. I think the rule set is the primary reason that SCA heavy combat diverges from historical practice (insofar as we know what that practice was). I think we see lots of historical tec...
