Asbjorn: I like your wording better. You and Dmitriy make a good point about avoiding the use of the word "grappling". Clermont: Yes. A blow to the arm would end the fight. In effect each bout will be counted blows and the number of blows will be one. The calibration step is not strictly intended to...

[SCA] Tournament Idea - Comments?

Greetings, I am hoping to take advantage of your collective experience in troublshooting the plans for a tournament. My hope is to run an SCA tournament that more closely recreates historical conditions. Your suggestions are very welcome. Why an SCA tournament? The SCA is the 500 pound gorilla of th...

Unless you are fighting with a moderate to large-sized shield then range is your primary defense (i.e. they can't hit you if they can't reach you). As Dmitriy says, why stand in the danger zone if you aren't accomplishing anything? The same rule seems to hold true for larger shields, but with some m...

On a slight tangent here: - I very much like the fact that the rules for a specific event have been published well in advance. I would like to see this happen for *all* events so that participants are aware of the standards of behavior expected of them. - I also like the fact that the interpretation...

Corazzina / Covered Breastplate - When? Where?

I know that exact dating is difficult, but I'm seeing substantially similiar transitional rigs that are being billed as anything from 1370 to 1450. When does the corazzina-style covered breast-plate first appear? Where? And when does it go away? I'm confused and would appreciate a little help. Thanks.

[SCA] Hypothetical Rules Lawyering

This is all hypothetical and I'd like to get some experienced opinions on these questions. The conventions of combat (SCA Marshal's Handbook, online, edition of 2000, page 9, IV. A. 2) states: The blade of a weapon may not be grasped at any time, nor may it be trapped in contact with the fighter's b...

I think I understand what you're asking. You're using your wrist to actively provide that last torque to the sword at the moment of impact? What I have found works for me is visuallization. I picture all shots as being launched from the shoulder. The arm does nothing but guide the path of the sword ...
