Re: Admin for mercenary company in 1471
The contract was written twice on a piece of paper and then the two halves were separated. This gave each party a complete contract and if there was a dispute the two halves could be brought together to prove they each had a valid copy. You should talk to Chef de Chambre as 1471 puts you into the ag...

Re: Boxwood Substitutes?
The grain is indeed running across the teeth. I will be re-orienting the cutting direction. I have no intention of making these out of poplar. But I had a board of poplar that I could use to practice planing and try cutting a couple of designs. I'll work out the big mistakes in cheap wood and then I...

Planed the poplar down to the right size, threw together a basic design, had the laser cut it, rough sanded it. The design was crappy and a better design will yield better results. Need...

Re: Boxwood Substitutes?
Okay, the process works. I'm going to refine my designs and technique using poplar and then move into hardwood. Walnut and Red Oak are the two most available and I'm going to start with them. I'll look into Boxwood, Holly, and Pear in about eight months. Any suggestions on finishing these? Beyond a ...

Depends on how the process works out. If it's good, then 10 or 15 to start with. Some to sell, some to gift, a couple just to mess around and experiment with.

Re: Boxwood Substitutes?
I've looked for boxwood and pear on Woodcrafters and they don't have any.
I did find a couple of local places that have boxwood logs and the wife is up for giving those a try. Since I'm the one that will be milling them, and I remember my previous failures in this regard, I'm less enthusiastic.

Mostly because I can't find a nearby supplier of boxwood planks. It comes in half-logs and I'm not willing to put in the work half-logs would require.

Just as the title says: What woods can be substituted for boxwood? I intend to make some combs. I want to use wood, I'm not using ivory or bone.

Islamic Backgammon Sets
Check it out. The top image I don't know the dating on. It looks like 15th Century Persian. Possibly later. The lower image is from 1300-1330. Go to the metmusum link and you can zoom. Note the layout of the backgammon (nard, tablas) board. The center bars are very pronounced AND the pieces appear t...

Best repurposed grain silo? Tattoine. Seriously. With the exception of the Skywalker homestead and the purpose built set, all those Kasr structures were intended to store grain.

Based on what you've provided it sounds like the metal cooled too fast in the 1st vault and prevented the pour from reaching the other spaces. The primary solutions here are going to be: -Heat the metal more -Increase the size of the vaults -Pre-heat the mold -Use a flux/insulator such as talc powde...

14th Century Kit Guide - Draft
This is the very beginnings of a kit guide for 14th Century re-creators in the US. It is a basic list of what you 'must' have, should have, and might likely have on your person. It tells you what, where to buy it, where to find instructions on how to make it, and where to look for more info. Yes, it...

In my younger days I packed my armor bag, threw in a toothbrush, bowl, and whatever I had that passed for garb and drove. There was always shelter somewhere and I had a pup tent I could use.
Now? It takes a day to pack the truck.

Re: running BOTN results?
If you get a chance, look up the semi-final 5x5 fights, USA 3 vs Russia. That was probably the best fight of the tournament. The US kissed them hard . I was screaming my head off and my wife was right next to me telling me: calm down, you're going to scare... is that the US? Oh, good hit! Yeah, he's...

Re: running BOTN results?
Okay, in the singles Aveloc advanced to the quarters but was eliminated there. In the 5x5s one of the US teams advanced to the semi-finals. It was amazing. They smacked the Belarussians around and they gave the Russians (who went on to win) the hardest fight they got in the entire tournament. Way to...

Re: running BOTN results?
There's a question about how they are advancing people though. If it's wins (with points being used to break ties) then ALL of the US singles fighters are in the top eight (Jaye is tied with a German fighter for eighth position). If it's points, then one is in the top eight and two are in the bottom...

Re: running BOTN results?
I'm trying to confirm, but I think they take the top 24 fighters (in the singles) and make two groups. The first group is the top 8 fighters of the 24 and the second group is the bottom 16 of the 24. The second group is paired up and they fight. This group includes Jay and Harvey. The winners of tho...

Re: running BOTN results?
The French team had too many injuries and could not take the field. It was a problem the Italians skirted by taking the field with less than 21. I believe they had 20 in two cases and 18 for the fight against Russia.FenianArms wrote:did the french surrender?igelkott wrote:So why was france vs USA canceled?
