I don't know why, but my brain automatically looks at... well, anything, and says 'What if I tried...?' So using the plasma cutter to etch/engrave is apparently not standard but possible. Cool.

Love it. Made seven medieval knife blanks in thirty minutes. Twenty of that was doing the computer design. I'll screw them up while I'm trying to figure out grinding the blade, but I'm still very excited. Nice what brand cnc did you use? Not sure. My workshop club owns it. It was kit built and uses...

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA
I have been tossing this thought around for a while and now have a couple people working on periodish camps to camp with me so I thought I`d try to get some ideas on how to deal with the modern tents and camps that set up around you. I am by far a period nazi, but when we go to the trouble to build...

Re: New SCA rapier rule
The modern competitive mindset demands a clear winner. Clear-ish, any way. That requires detailed rule sets and standards and inspections and all the trappings of modern sport. How about we leave that all behind with Cut and Thrust? If you don't have double elimination tournaments and a rule set de...

Re: New SCA rapier rule
Side note: I share your concerns, brewer. I tend to approach the issue from a different angle, however. My suggestion for keeping Cut and Thrust pure is: remove the competition and modern mindset. The modern competitive mindset demands a clear winner. Clear-ish, any way. That requires detailed rule ...

Ok, I'm with you now. Under your idea, how would melees & large wars work? See below. But I assume you were probably talking about Society's cut & thrust, so, a little more realistically; How do you know the force levels wouldn't normalize anyway ? They will. Regional and cross regional standards (...

Re: New SCA rapier rule
I don't get quite what you're saying. Can you explain it again for me, please? If people establish a regional or sca-wide standard then that will be based on certain considerations: what armor is being worn, what weapons are being used, what time period this is, etc... A standard, however broad, li...

Re: New SCA rapier rule
The idea that there is a quantifiable, standard force level for unarmored combat, or for armored combat, seems ridiculous to me. There really isn't one. Fight an Atlantian and then fight a warrior from Meridies & you'll see what I mean. What does exist is a regional concept on how a blow should be ...

Brewer, I disagree with you (and, to a degree, Raito). Here's why. Disagreeing with me is a bit silly, as I was reporting things that actually happened, and the rules and situations as they actually exist. Poorly worded statement on my part, I was 'disagreeing' with the situation you were reporting...

I'm surprised nobody offers pre-assembled and ready to iron-on kingdom populace badges; either as described above, embroidered or even silk-screened. Iron it on, run a stich around the edge...done. This is the same weekend one of the knights strongly suggested I ditch my kit, get plastic and a madu and then I'd be effective. I tested my C&T Hanwei Practical Hand-and-a-Half (http://www.cashanwei.com/cashanwei/prod_Detail.aspx?id=SH2106) last night and it almost passed for heavy rapier. One way up it flexed 0.9", the other 1.1". SO CLOSE, but no cigar. Still fine for C&T though. I filled a water bottle with water until m...

Galfried: one way to avoid that, (and granted it does not work unless you are purchasing in person) is to buy your own 6oz weight and test it before buying. As for purchasing over the internet I would say: read the return policy very carefully. YMMV Who knows? Maybe one of the Hanwei sellers will s...

None of the single handed Hanweis I've owned or encountered would pass the flex test. Except the Practical Sidesword and Hutton Sabre (which is not allowed because it's not period - I love the consistency of that rule enforcement). But, knock yourself out testing them. The 1" test for heavy rapier ...
