An old Bowie knife. As far as the 'iron shielded' phrase goes, I'll vote for poetic license/kenning. m Kenning Related Terms • euphemism • periphrasis • connotation • allusion Definition: A stereotyped synonym, often a compound or hyphenated word, used in Old English poetry....
How did I choose my heraldic device? Badly. I would suggest you look at a couple of books on the subject ("Heraldry" by Neubecker is good), before you talk to a herald. This assumes you're in the SCA (sorry if you're not and please excuse my presumption).
Unfortunately, you're right. There seems to be very little about. Nicolle's "Arms and Armour of the Crusading Period (or Era? can't remember) has quite a few good line drawings Nicolle took from original sources. It's a big 2-volume book, with pictures in one volume and the descriptions in the othe...
A. What is the source of the illustration? B. Where is the effigy found? C. Are there any contemporary effgies (say, within a 20 year period) to compare with? D. What other contemporary effgies (if any) are from the same geographical area? E. What do we know about the career/life of who is entombed...

After a quick search, I found this: Bullough, V.L. "Transvestites in the Middle Ages." "The American Journal of Sociology (periodical)" Vol. 79, #6 (May, 1974), pp 1381-1394. There were lots of listings about cross-dressing in Shakespeare when I did the search (on JSTOR), but this is not a surprise....

I like to fight. The tourney format is unimportant. Single-elim, Double-elim, holmgang, bear-pit, points, torch-light (as long as there's enough light) warlord or melee, it doesn't really matter to me. I like pick-up fights too.
I have achy elbows and shoulders, most of it due to fighting. Some days, everything's ok, some days everything hurts. Here's what I do to deal with it. 1. Before fighting, warm-up. Usually this means slow work with another figher. Sometimes I stretch, too. I also wear a neoprine brace. 2. Exercise i...
I was surfing about looking for viking-stuff and stumbled across a website from Colorado called Urweg (www.urweg\tk.com [I think]). The website had gorgeous jewellry (belt sets, belt mounts, pendants, brooches, etc), if you happen to be into Norse. Has anyone had any dealing with these folks? Thanks...
Sir Steffan Von Dresden Stefan von Dresden von Dresden is my answer. This name comes up a lit on the Archive- is there any video online of Sir Stefan fighting? After watching the videos on Kolfinna's website last night, I'm looking for more ~Wil Sir Stefan von Dresden is so fast with his snap shot,...
DukeAlaric (George S.) wrote:Kings will throw combattants out of Crown. In Caid, Duke Edward and Duke Avery were having such an atrocious final round that King Dietrich threw them both out of Crown, and crowned the third place entrant, Brion Thornbird as his successor.
I have had the pleaure of buying and receiving a shield-blank from Thorbjorn. At all times he has been very pleasant and patient. Delivery time was excellent. Please support this endeavour.
I look forward to using the blank next spring as a shield.
If someone enters Crown, and is blatantly cheating, it is within the Crown's right to throw them out on the spot (actually they can throw anyone out for anything they like pretty much). The real problem arises when a really skilled fighter uses a "get out of jail free card," and shucks off one good...
Here's the rest of what I found: Chorley, Patrick. "The Cloth Exports of Flanders and Northern France during the Thirteenth Century: A Luxury Trade?" Well, there's the "Art Index" "RILA" (now defunct--but still very useful) and the grand-daddy of all of them "Bulletin de Art et Archaeologie" Also, the "Anthropological Index (online)"
Mord has done quite a bit of digging on cotton in the middle ages, having found a reference to cotton pants for vikings which set him off. I'll send him a note and ask him to chime in. Maria A.S. Very nice, Sir. RLS Bruce-Mitford's "The Sutton Hoo Ship Burial. Volume 2, Arms, Armour, and Regalia" is the book for information on the finds from Mound 1 of that famous dig. The helm looks to be based upon one of the Valsgarde finds--probably Valsgarde 6 or 5, I can never remember. G. Arwidsson's ...
I'll try to be brief: 1. I do not consider face thrusts a "great equalizer" unless you don't let Duke, Counts and Knight face thrust. 2. The Society is very large and the Armour Archive, while populated by SCAians, is not really representative. The interpretation of the rules of the list varies from...
I largely believe that SCA rattan fighting has a limited life-time. There are reasons for this: 1. The discovery and distribution of period (though not the entire period) fighting techniques. 2. The expansion of activities within the Society itself--namely fencing and equestrian activities. 3. The a...
Once a year the East Kingdom has an event called "100 Minutes War." The event is a resurrection battle that is 100 minutes in middle of November. It's usually either freezing or muddy or both. Great fun.
Food. Have a post-fighting get together after the practice. I realize this maybe not practical where you are, I suppose, but while you are feeding the masses, tell them stories about the events you've been to. Make it amusing and have fun with it.
