Halv, Would you say something like that could have made its way to Scandinavian lands? We've talked about lamellar armour, curved swords, there's a Bhudda figure excavated at Birka (it *was* Birka wasnt it?) whats the likelyhood of something out of the ordinary like that being traded or adopted in ...

Rings like a bell...

My new helmet, that is. I padded it this weekend, put it on my head, and had my wife hit me with rattan. The helm has a very nice, loud bell tone (like Qusimoto's dinner bell!), and if I don't do something about it, I'm going to go seriously deaf!

Any suggestions? Really, I'm serious.

First, an entire rim hasn't been found for the Viking Age. Complete rimming has been found at Valsgarde; check Arwidsson's books. As for the Viking, the most complete rimming is from Grave 736 (Arbman "BirkaL Die Graber"); there's enough clips there to approximate the diameter of the shield at 80 cm...

A hard shield, iron edges and banding, was the most common found. Not during the Viking Age, and I'm pretty sure hardly, if at all, in the centuries before. Metal clips yes, but not full metal rims. Evidence of rawhide rims exists, but to the best of my knowledge, no metal rims have ever been found...

Guys, you're picking on me now... Sir Mord, I've been hearing the exact opposite. Animal is right, making lamellar plates out of 16 gauge metal is not a good idea. The armor would weigh too much. I have made a body armor out of leather scales sown together--basically lamellar. There is, I think, an example in "Njal's Saga" or "The Saga of Burnt Njal" where Gunnar, who is later outlawed, fought with a spear and sword.

But remember, the Sagas, on the whole are legends and not considered reliable history.

Njal come back now, hear?

Sounds to me like a Migration-era value, in context, not a Medieval one. The bond of the Chief to the Warband or Telau is not the same value as the chivalric values of the High and Late Middle Ages. Nothing wrong with it, but it does not seem Medieval to me. The contract or obligation between the h...

Timing is the key, here. If your opponette is furiously throwing blows, hitting back has the risk of over-c...
