Halv, Would you say something like that could have made its way to Scandinavian lands? We've talked about lamellar armour, curved swords, there's a Bhudda figure excavated at Birka (it *was* Birka wasnt it?) whats the likelyhood of something out of the ordinary like that being traded or adopted in ...

Rings like a bell...
My new helmet, that is. I padded it this weekend, put it on my head, and had my wife hit me with rattan. The helm has a very nice, loud bell tone (like Qusimoto's dinner bell!), and if I don't do something about it, I'm going to go seriously deaf!
Any suggestions? Really, I'm serious.

First, an entire rim hasn't been found for the Viking Age. Complete rimming has been found at Valsgarde; check Arwidsson's books. As for the Viking, the most complete rimming is from Grave 736 (Arbman "BirkaL Die Graber"); there's enough clips there to approximate the diameter of the shield at 80 cm...

This is iffy, but it sort of fills most of the parameters. In the University of Minnesota library there is color microfilm entitled: "Color film reproduction of medieval sports and pastimes from Bod. (Bodlien) ms. 264 (Romance of Alexander). Apparently this manuscript is from the 14th century. That'...

Reproduction. I made it in my photoshop. But, the bodhisattva knows, that if the Japanese had ever seen moose, they would have made this helm in the seventeenth or eighteenth century! Yup, they would have. I think I saw a helmet, years ago, in either the Tower of London or the V&A, that was shaped ...

A hard shield, iron edges and banding, was the most common found. Not during the Viking Age, and I'm pretty sure hardly, if at all, in the centuries before. Metal clips yes, but not full metal rims. Evidence of rawhide rims exists, but to the best of my knowledge, no metal rims have ever been found...

Guys, you're picking on me now... Mord, I *know* an axe, especially a large 2 hander is a big, powerful weapon, even more so in genetically larger than average Germanic/Scandinavian hands (compared to other Europeans). My point was WHY did they shift to that, when the shield was the de facto item o...

My first "kit" is lost in the depths of time and space. Some of it, especially the carpet body "armor" sown together with fishing line ('cause it was strong and it wouldn't rot), was intentially cast out into those depths. My first helmet that I actually owned was stolen from me with other armor bit...

Your scholars in Mali are anthropologists, not historians. Their point of view is different, and the storytellers in Mali still exist--how far back can they really go? How much is lost? How much is added? How much is glossed over. The process of their oral history is still alive and being used. This...

Agreed, Chef. However, if the cultural institution existed during what historians have called the Middle Ages, isn't it a medieval cultural institution? Sure, yes, the insititution of the Anglo-Saxon bond died out (in a very literal and radical way!), but simply because a tradition or institution st...

Sir Mord, I've been hearing the exact opposite. The amount of detail provided, concerning the ways of life and the particulars of combat that we can and have verified through new dig findings and experemental archaeology, leads us to believe that the sagas largely *were* based on real life happenin...

Animal is right, making lamellar plates out of 16 gauge metal is not a good idea. The armor would weigh too much. I have made a body armor out of leather scales sown together--basically lamellar. You need to stiffen the leather before you use it. I used bees' wax and cheap acrilic floor wax. They wo...

Sounds to me like a Migration-era value, in context, not a Medieval one. The bond of the Chief to the Warband or Telau is not the same value as the chivalric values of the High and Late Middle Ages. Nothing wrong with it, but it does not seem Medieval to me. The contract or obligation between the h...

Is this in war (group combat) or tourney (single combat)? In war I block; that is my job as a shield. In tournament, simply blocking will not win the fight; eventually you have to strike back. Timing is the key, here. If your opponette is furiously throwing blows, hitting back has the risk of over-c...
