Ok,

Just checked U-Penn's catalog: "Waffen und Kostumkunde" from 1959 to 1989.

The Library of Congress: 1964-1999, 2002. LoC also owns "Zietschrift fur historische waffen- und kostumkunde" from 1921-1944. This periodical was also called waffen und kostumkunde.

Gotta go!

Re: Sheilds

I'm interested in knowing the difference in material, weight and damage resistance between different types of shields. Strap sheilds in, my mind, tend to be heavier than Center grip, or punch shields. I know they were used by different peoples for different purposes at different times, but I haven'...

Most ILL services worth their salt order books and articles from a list of holders in order to deal with that exact situation. It's called a "rota." In general there are 5 libraries in a rot...

This may have been asked before, but since I am just getting back into the SCA, and I haven't been to the AA in a while I am going to ask anyways. Does anyone know of either book or web resources to verify that a name was used during the time period they are portraying? Try looking in the 929 secti...

Waffen und Kostumekunde has a long and strange history. Modern issues of the periodical (serial--a magazine) are held by UPENN, I think in the U 800s (the 5th floor of the Van Pelt Library) Older editions (which is to say pre-World War II) of Waffen und Kostumkunde are a little hard to find--the tit...

I have often been tempted to wear a plain brown or black belt and leave my white belt for ceremonial and battle field purposes (among other regalia).

I have a small, plain brass buckle (about 1/2 an inch) for such a purpose. Would that do?

I certainly saw what looked like a gold torc Daffid-Kidd's book on the vikings. Photos, however, make me wary. You never get any sense of proportion. For me, as a Scandinavian archaeologist, a torc is a neckring from the earlier part of the Iron Age. It would be shaped much like the one that is to ...

Here's another re-enactor fashion I have seen and seems suspect to me: wearing a torc/torque/neckring. Did Scandanavian men wear these during the era we are discussing? Why are tents neccesary at all? Rain? Mord. Capt. Atli is right; a little rain won't kill you. Exposure will. Rain, of course, is the reason why God gave us sheep. The real problem here is the materials used to make the shield. Also the size of the shield is a factor.
