Not that I know of. Conversely, the "Viking Age" is about 300-250 years, and covers, geographically, from Greenland to Kiev. The only book that I know of on leather finds is from Hedeby. I think its mostly about shoes. Give me some time and I'll see if I can find the citation. I'm also sure someone ...

A long time ago in Pennsic far, far away I was Laird Master John the Pell in a "dreaded elite killer unit" (cough, sputter!!) in the woods battle. We were in the old woods (which is now camping) on the causeway. Johnny, sent me down to guard the trail next to the stream, figuring that giving me some...

Nissan, Close. The closest I've seen. Have I got documentation for him! Adam, Me? Pick nits? Ok, let me review. First, I stated that some folks have a problem with money when they buy their. Indeed, in another part of the archive, we've both posted on a thread about this very problem. I have been in...

I don't agree with His Grace. But then again, I'm probably pounding my head against the wall in this. Let me try a different tack, I have never, ever seen any armorer make a Viking Age or Vendel Period shieldboss, much less document such stuff. I have gobbs of documentation for both times. Every arm...

Thats exactly what it is. The movie starred Yahoo Serious. Take Care I dare say its a replica of an <I think> Austrialian bank robbing pair "Ned Kelly" that used a suit looking like this out of boiler plate. Used it as a tank on legs so to speak. Someone can correct me on this. Cheers There's anoth...

White Mountain Armoury is right, armor is expensive because of the time and labor involved in making it. Finding armor for a group is a particuallarly frustrating business. I've done this before, and if you lived any closer, I'd probably come over to help you. Not everybody has the skill to build th...

James, Sorry, I must disagree. I've owned a great looking helm that simply didn't fit my head. A helm that fits is safe; a helm that doesn't fit is not safe. A helm that fits and looks good is what I own. Mord. Well is it unsafe for everyone or just you? A helm of proper construction should never b...

At the risk of another tangent... I speak from experience when I say it is better to have decent armor that you can fight in than really nice armor that fights you . I had (and to a certain degree still have) the latter and it is THIS type of armor that CAN stand in the way of improving (though in ...

Well said. Early period is easily as worthy as later stuff. And having the strength to do your thing when pressured by others to do theirs instead is a rare strength indeed. I'm the guy that invited Mord south and I'm just regretful of the fact that I didnt get to go when he came down. If we hadnt ...

If money is such an issue for you that you can't afford a decent-looking kit, then you need to reconsider your priorities in life. Get things in order, save a little money, and buy good stuff. Be patient. Don't be in such a rush to get on the field that you wind up looking like crap, and never both...

Sir Mord: In very many ways, it's easier for you, as a 10th century Icelandic Karl or Thegn (which is what your SCA rank is equivalent to, I believe) to present the proper image than it would be for me, in a circa 1187 Crusades portrayal. Actual honest-to-God armour for a person of your station is ...

with spring and stainless steels available, and readily available silks, linens, and wools, there is no reason why anyone should look bad at all. With well made armor and equipment, no reason why their armor should hold them back from being a top level fighter in the SCA. Alaric Your Grace, I'm sor...

Be the mirror. Blows are exchanged. People do great feats with God-given talents. Very little of worth is remembered. What *is* more likely remembered is that which is ugly, displeasing, crude, and petty. When you look like crap, who cares if you have amazing skill? Fight long enough and you will g...

Having read through much of this thread, I suppose I'm just too tired to help myself from keeping my mouth shut. Please understand this post is only my opinion. Animal, Glad you're trying to get the guy's kit looking better. My first kit was blue plastic covered by a sheet. The guy may be an ass kicker-but the skull T-shirt was goofy. That does not help the guy's rep. In the future, he might want to stick to dark-colored T-shirts-they blend in better. Or h...

A long time ago, I used a cross hilt. In fact, I bought a cast aluminum "vikingesque" from a friend who no longer plays. I still have it. The problem with cross hilts is the gauntlet or gauntlets. They need to fit and they need to be easy to repair and re-glove. But even with a gauntlet, damage was ...

I've used both solid (cup) and bar (basket) hilts. I see very little difference between solid and bar hilts made of metal. Bar hilts tend to heavier, but they also tend to be rock solid, and in certain situations where my hand might get abused, I prefer bar hilts. The real difference between solid a...
