Cleaning Leather.
I have the leather weight-lifting belt that's sweat-stained or salt stained, etc. Is cleaning it with saddle soap ok? Or is there a better way?
Thanks,
Mord.

I have sitting on my desk at work, Kirpichnikov's work on the subject. Yeah, it's in Russian. Mord. Did you want to dispose of it -- what with its heathen tongue and all. I'll be happy to take it off your hands at no cost to you. Do you have any online samples of these manuscripts? Or what culture ...

Gin. Gin was pretty much the cocaine of England in the 18th Century, so much so that a tax put upon it caused riots in 1736. I think the idea of coffee, tea, the potato, corn (maize), and chcolate as being a cause of intellectual ferment must be combined with various other historical event. Coffee a...

Kublai Kahn and his Empire were parasites on the back of host civilizations ... You know, the last time I read the term parasitic culture was in the context of blaming a thousand-year-dead kingdom for the woes of post-Soviet Russia. Then describe how the Mongols were not, instead of insinuating tha...

An absolute agreement with Mord. Lacking any citations of women participating in Chivalric tournaments we have to say that we do not believe they happened. Certainly other cultures had warrior women, certainly women went to war at varied times and for varied reasons. But we aren't talking about tha...

Tournaments date to the 11th century at the earliest, and Scandanavia isn't noted for its heavy cavalry during the Migration era. I don't know of any scholars alive who extend the Middle Ages to the Fall of Rome, but rather recognize the era as one of tribal migrations. A prerequisite of the Middle...

(Start making it now, or establish a charcoal budget if you plan to obtain commercial chunk charcoal.) I have 100+ acres of woods (well I own 10, the rest is accross the road on my fathers place) I think I can round up a charcoal source:) Given a successful run, you will end up with a nice bloom of...

Re: Do wars have "personas"?
Lilies War = Anglo-Saxon/Norse Little archery, lots of smaller field battles My understanding is that the Norse had archery. In a way, for SCA purposes, it was more than the high middle ages -- because the nobles were doing it whereas later it seems to have been relegated to a lower-class weapon (a...

History is a matter of finding sources, being able to read/examine them, and then being able to understand them. Some places at a certain time provided plenty of sources, and some don't. The skill of historians is being able to gather enough sources and then examining them as they are, not as you wa...

This was my reference: http://www.vendelbygden.se/html/vendel4.jpg Although you can't see how the bowl is constructed, but the cheek/face plate is somewhat the same as I did it. Also Knotwolf has done it same way. Here are some more pics That's the helmet from ...
