Just like those described to be owned by nobles in Beowulf, a good number of the heads were inlaid with silver or gold; these were not the weapons of peasants who couldn't afford swords. These were weapons of people who chose a spear, no matter the cost, because they were superior for the task at h...

Things that helped me. 1) Lose the weight. 2) Treat fighting like a sport, train at fight practice instead of fighting to win always. Fight to learn. 3) Travel and fight everyone who is better than you that you can find. Ask questions after the bouts on what your opponent thinks you can improve and...

As someone really familiar with that smell, please answer the following questions: 1. How old are the books? 2. How are the books bound? It there any leather on the covers, or is it all cardboard? 3. What color are the pages? 4. How thick does the paper seem? 5. Is any of the printing faded? If the ...

Interesting, and well done. I agree with you about the date of effigy being more important than the date of death. Is there any info on the size of the effigies? Or is there not enough info to make that statistically useful? I ask this because, well, size matters, as does postion of the effigy in th...

Numismatics is one of the most Obsessive-Compulsive academic pursuits known. Coinage and medalions have their own series of journals and other scholarly outlets. The reading can be tedious, but useful for many interested. As for the usage of coinage in Society, over the years, I've seen folks strike...

I saw this thread and thought someone zombied (tm) an old one. Now I see it's a new thread on an old, well worn, subject. I like James B's advise: If you want a peerage follow a path that leads to it. Don't we already have 4 peerages? Pelican, Laurel, Knighthood...and win a Crown. Guy, You are not ...

Doug, What is petty to you may be important to others. What is worthless to you may be of worth to others. What is meaningless to you may mean something to others. Respect others, Doug, and they just might respect you. As for fun, I have learned over the years (26 in the SCA--and I'm only considered...

Good that you're translating the Rule of the Templars, Doug. I sincerely wish you luck in your endevour. Sadly, your link doesn't work, at least on my computer. I'm sorry you don't think your translation is of no significance to the SCA--I know a couple of house-holds interested in the Militant Ord...

here you dropped this. No, I've had a tight grip this entire time. Why do light fencers need titles and awards? Why do ANY of you need titles and awards? Why do you insist on instituting a social hierarchy? Why isn't doing the deed good enough? Why do you feel that without recognition for what you'...

I have found that most (not all) people who hate the SCA and love the Middle Ages tend to be people who don't like to have to measure up to other people's measuring sticks The only people who dislike us are just jealous.
