Out of curiosity, what is the purpose and advantage of having a "typology"? While Oakeshott did it with swords, I still have yet to understand the purpose of typologies, other than to give us, in hindsight as modern people, a way to discuss certain forms; pigeonholing and classifying thin...

Angusm0628 - I did indeed find and read through Mord's thread on Norse culture previously. It has good information (which I am definately going to use), but I would also like to be focused on a particular area and time then be generic or a blend of them all. Also, what site is Karen Larsdatter's? C...

Well, you've stumbled on a rather sticky problem... The Geats. They are not, if current scholarship is correct, The Svear, who lived in the time and place of the Vendel Period. The Svear seem to be the people/tribe/nation who started the graveyards which we call Vendel and Valsgarde. The Svear, in t...

Knarrarbringa means merchant ship breasts. Kinda like being named Jennifer Bigtits. As to your question to Mord, I don't think it was super common but it happened. Skallagrimr is Bald Grimr. I would guess he didn't grow up with the name. In general, "Viking" naming practices begin with wh...

"Broad" is an Anglo-Saxon word, so it probably has a similiar cognoman (sp?) in Old Norse. "Shoulder" too, is an A-S word, and would also probably have a cognoman in Old Norse. Given this, I name him something like, "Gunnar Broad-shoulders" or perhaps "Gunnar the W...

How many shields have you got? With my wooden plywood shields, I first glue down felt weather stripping (use large gumbo paper-clips as clamps--they're cheap and effective). Then I glue down scrap leather over the felt (using the the same paper clips). Finally, I glue leather over all. Sometimes, I ...

If you are being chivalrous, whether it be the victorian ideal or more medieval construct, then you would not normally shoot arrows at other people. As Vitus said, it was a war system that used unskilled peasants as its mechanism. Noble men at arms and knights rode into battle. If you choose to sho...

However, when you compare Birka to other sites dated to the Viking age, you sometimes find yourself less than impressed. Look, for instance, at the dig report for Islandbridge and Kilhaim (sp): the report, published in 1910, is really only a catalog of objects. Is there a map of the graves? Is ther...
