Concerning leather armor in the early middle ages: Somewhere in my very old neurological memory chips, I read that RLS Bruce-Mitford (aka "Mr. Sutton-Hoo") speculated that the armor of Sutton Hoo Mound One might have contained a "Romanish Musculia body-armor" made of leather. Bru...

Having spent time studying Early Medieval Northern Europe and the arms and armor of that period, the question in my mind is where to begin? The usual beginning is a combination of place and time. For the early middle ages in general and the viking period in particular, the time is from about 900AD t...

As my 2nd cup of coffee brews, I will try to answer these questions. First, I'm a lousy typist, and when I'm trying to "put things together" when I'm writing (in any form), I even worse. Thank the gods of proofreading. To begin with the Finns and Lapps (I know, Thomas, you didn't ask about...

If we are to ascribe the works of a few to the whole then well *I* invented the internet! Thomas I just spent 30 minutes writi...

Ok, here goes, despite Glen K. The 9th, 10th and 11th centuries is, obvously, a large amount of time--300 years. In general, during these year, the peoples of Scandinavia were particularly active for other peoples in other places to take note. What exact happened and the details of those events (not...

I'll address this subject presently, but right now I need coffee and have to earn my living. But for the moment, kingdom or state formation in Scandinavia during the early middle ages is a subject that has been partially addressed. Klav Randsborg, a Danish archaeologist, did some work in the area so...

I assume we are talking literary Arthur. I didn't see Excalibur until last year and it atleast tries to capture medieval Arthurian literary ideas unlike movies like First Knight. IMO the best Arthurian film in English is Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail. There is a French movie Percival tha...

If the kids are at the lowest level, have them read "The Once and Furture King" by TH White. It's a thick book, but entertaining. Movies are harder: "First Knight" is just the worst movie I've seen that deals with Arthur. "Excalibar" doesn't suck as much as "First ...
