Having spent time studying Early Medieval Northern Europe and the arms and armor of that period, the question in my mind is where to begin? The usual beginning is a combination of place and time. For the early middle ages in general and the viking period in particular, the time is from about 900AD t...

<cue> but what about the Finns? Now did all the Norse participate in the things over all of their history or was it only certain groups in certain times and certain places? If we are to ascribe the works of a few to the whole then well *I* invented the internet! Thomas I just spent 30 minutes writi...

Ok, here goes, despite Glen K. The 9th, 10th and 11th centuries is, obvously, a large amount of time--300 years. In general, during these year, the peoples of Scandinavia were particularly active for other peoples in other places to take note. What exact happened and the details of those events (not...

I'll address this subject presently, but right now I need coffee and have to earn my living. But for the moment, kingdom or state formation in Scandinavia during the early middle ages is a subject that has been partially addressed. Klav Randsborg, a Danish archaeologist, did some work in the area so...

When will I quit fighting? Probably when I crawl into my GP and he tells I need to go see an Osteopathic Surgeon. It really is a toss-up between my knees and my shoulders to see which is going to blow first. Other than that, it's been a hell of a ride! As for the aftermath. I have projects in the ar...

I assume we are talking literary Arthur. I didn't see Excalibur until last year and it atleast tries to capture medieval Arthurian literary ideas unlike movies like First Knight. IMO the best Arthurian film in English is Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail. There is a French movie Percival tha...

Perhaps your friend should look at this website:

Don't be put off the seemingly scholarly look of the site. There's plenty of non-scholarly sources there. Look under "bibliography."

This is a real challenge for me, since I live in an big apartment building in downtown Philly now. My apartment has a patio, which would be a nice place to work on armor, BUT the patio is in the cavernous atrium of the building, so any hammering I do reverberates around and everyone with an inward-...

A friend of mine was queen of Caid (decades ago), she had a troubled reign, and a king who got sick of the job and showed up for coronation, some event or another, and to step down. I figure A**** earned her county, and his. If you're not absolutely ready to take on the job you have no business on ...

Re: [SCA] Leg Hits and Armor
So, my question to you all is two-fold. One, how do I train myself to recognize good hits when I really don't feel them all that well, and two, when I make (eventually) or possibly buy a new set of legs, hopefully matching the ss Churburg arms Murdock is making me, what should I make sure I do in o...

Talbot, The insult was a perceived lack of acknowledgement, so there is no quote I can post. From what I can tell, you were defending Kasper's qualifications. IOW, you were taking sides, as far as could tell. I was not taking sides. I simply knew what Carlo's qualifications were and stated them. I ...

Btw, I think, Talbot, you are being arrogant to the point of insulting. Wow! How so? I asked if anyone could tell us which bascinet is was and if it was a good picture? How is that arrogant to the point of being insulting? I also tried to be helpful by telling what Carlo's qualifications were. I fi...

Dear Kasper, You are asking me to post on public forum a recently (Sept. 2008) published photograph (which is in color) without the knowledge or permission of the editor or publisher of the periodical. I'm not doing that. I suspect that doing so is illegal, and if I were the publisher of the Apollo,...

Btw, I think, Talbot, you are being arrogant to the point of insulting. Mord. Mord ... you should not say that, especially because there was nothing arrogant or insulting in what Talbot wrote.
