Go to your library, and ask for "The Cambridge Medieval History." This multi-volume work is large and tedious, but it will familiarize you with the period.

No protection is completely adequate. I've had my right thumb broken twice while fighting with gauntlets. As I've posted previously, an ice hockey glove is the minimum protection.

I don't like shield baskets. They're too heavy, which aggrevates the tendonius that's already there.
