Here's a thought; we could do the medieval thing...
Two kingdoms provide their own army. The fighters from other kingdoms would be allowed to go "free lance" and offer their services to the highest bidder...
Mord, who is now ducking and covering.

The image originally displayed on this thread is from the Vendle Period--pre-viking Sweden. I suspect there has been some discussion about what this image is about, but I've never read about it being a image of Odin or Wotan. I suspect someone like Ortwin Gamber probably had a few things to say. Rem...

Our knowledge of viking helmet of the 10th and 11th century is mostly pictorial, with one notable exception: the Gjermundbu helmet from Norway. However, I believe that is dated to the late 9th, early 10th century--tho' I'd have to check. The best I've seen pictorial evidence is from a small sculptur...

So in doing some basic research, I've found that by looking at The Holy Roman Empire, I may glean some information from there. I'd have to skim through a lot of it to focus on the Germanic provinces, but it should help.... I'm also going to look into those other books as well, but I have to admit, ...

And what has any of that to do with membership in the SCA? Sounds like asshattery to me. [quote]What kind of members do we want in the ARMA? ARMA membership is about accepting a certain set of values and following a way of pursuing them. We work hard to revive these skills physically and academical...

We used to have a practice on field owned by UPenn. During the summer the cops would park accross the street and watch. After a couple of times of this, I finally asked them what they thought. They found our fighting a form of entertainment--kind of like an appetizer before the real work of the nigh...

I think the extant examples could be better. The 19th century material from Du Chaillu is... actually horrible. Nice shoes, but i have issues with very many things in that paper. The 19th Century stuff from Du Chaillu is merely out of date, and reflects the state of scholarship at its time. Think u...

Id certainly love to hear more about your research Mord. Im a Dane myself. I love such northerly things. I'm considering a paper, and have even done a short outline of the project. With or without direct empirical evidence (or at least reliable info), I fear I'm taking on something of a monster. Ba...

Modern steel butted mail yes, but i challenge you to make butted mail form thin pieces of wrought iron wire and it not fall apart form it's own weight. I have made butted mail from soft iron and it held up okay. So you need to make it thicker and thus heavier. Thus consuming more metal and thus pro...

Mord At the risk of sounding like something from the 70s or 80s....what about butted mail in Iceland. Cheap, easier to make, relatively adequate for its needs. And while I would normally poo poo the idea of butted mail, would it not plausibly be something for a lower class man, lost to history only...

Re: Viking armor
This is my first attempt at period armor and I had help cutting the plates. From what I understand only chain mail and leather is period for Vikings, neither of which I was comfortable fighting in. So I made steel lamellar. It's period for Byzantium at that time. m Since there were Norse who fought...

The problem with affixed benches in a small craft is that it limits what else you can do with that space. Of course they could have built benches, I'm not disputing that at all. But I think dismissing a chest seat because it would slide around on a pitching deck is throwing the baby out with the ba...
