If possible, which given your location in northern AEthelmearc should be easier than most, talk to Master John the Pell. I've always felt he had a phenomenal grasp of sca melee tactics. I get the opportunity to chat with John the Pell from time to time and will be attending the Myrkie War practice....

Stoooopid Steel Question

Where can I get 16 gauge mild steel online? I ask this quesiton because all the sheet metal companies in Philly have hours in which I work. Thus, I am stuck with online resources. I am thinking of attempting to make a shield handle for a Vendel/viking round. I have documentation for this, and I figu...

So if the shoulder clasps weren't attached to a leather cuirass, what were they attached to? A cloak? I was under the impression that organics (cloth and leather) buried attached to metal often left traces that were preserved by leeching. Does this mean that there was nothing attached to the clasps...

Pardon me for saying this, but shouldn't the title of Count (or Jarl, as I believe he uses) prefix Sir Valgard Stonecleaver's name? just caught that... Sir Valgard is a Vicount, I believe. Btw, Olaf, I've heard that AEthelmearc has something, like, only 20 entrants. Talk about small. Mord.

I think H. Maryon in his article about the Sutton Hoo Shield (published in the 1940s--1947? Antiquity? or was it the Antiquaries Journal?) guessed that the shield from Mound 1 was strapped. This idea was later disproven, probably by Bruce-Mitford.

Yep. If you're interested in portraying as accurately as possible an Anglo-Saxon from that period, it's best to go with what we know . We know for sure that the Sutton Hoo burial contained a mail shirt, though it's far too corroded to be able to determine it's size or such things as sleeve length. ...
