The pronunciation -- especially on TH -- is driving me bats. There is a general rule about voiced/unvoiced TH at the beginning of a sentence. So is thyncan ("to appear so" -- root of ME "think") unvoiced, while the (ME "thee") is voiced? What rule can we trust? ARGH! E...

Conversely, if a Duke is training you in the first place, why isn't His Grace teaching you how to hit back? After all, you can only block with a shield, in whatever shape, only so long...

I took Old English in school as an independant study. What grammar and dictionary are you using?

The trick to learning the language is getting the pronouciation right.

Good luck, and keep in touch with your progress.

God forbid anyone of Nordic descent should use a kite sheild. Normans = Northmen Wrong. Just plain wrong. Normans were descended from Northmen, specifically, Danes. By the 11th century, the Normans of Normandy were their own civilization and culture, not a Danish civilization and culture. Proof of ...

Peter Beatson is the dude on Scandinavian shields of the early middle ages. From what we know, which isn't really a lot, shields were round. The Gokstad shields were round. Two of the shield-fragments found in at Birka seem to show that they were round. All of these examples are dated to the 9th or ...

Knights without horses, Vikings without boats... There are plenty of instances where the reeanctment and/or interpretation of knights can be legitimately done without horses, and even more where the same can be done of the Norse without boats. To thine own self be true. If you are interested in the history, then stay there. If you are interested in fantasy, then say so. If you are interested in both, do that as well, but make a distinction between them.

I know this was directed to Mord but I have to say "YES" in no uncertain terms. To give less than all you have is to heap contempt on your opponent. This not only cheapens the fight but lessens one's honor to many eyes. So, Duke Skullcrusher should have on his Crown Tournament A-game when...

Thorald, Jester,

In my mind, fighting is a test of skill. If my skill is greater than my opponent, then I should win. If my opponent's skill is greater, then I should not win. If we are evenly matched, then we'll see. In any case, I owe my opponent my best.

Well, this weekend, I was hit very hard. In fact, I was positively "popped" with a spear into my left side, where my armor is during a melee. Yeah, feel the bruise in my ribs.

But that's the way it goes. Comes with the territory.
