... I do WMA... One really positive thing about the SCA ... Here is one more: you can reality-check your WMA techniques. If they work in SCA, they may have worked in period. If they don't work in SCA, they won't have worked in actual battle. Or you can simply use blunt steel and find out if they wo...

Thanks so much guys. These were not easy to make. In fact they were FAR more challenging than I imagined - lots of stuff to account for and figure out. Yes indeed. However, you clearly learned a lot and undoubtedly motivated a number of us to take an interest in leather cases. I made a couple goble...

A welt stiffens the seam line taking the strain off the thread. No flex, no shear against thread fibre.

Re: leather CoP?
I'm curious if anyone has attempted to make a Wisby type 7 CoP (or any other type, I suppose) from heavy leather instead of with metal. Is it effective for SCA combat? Is there really much weight difference between one of leather and another of steel? I made a Type I from water hardened saddle skir...

Thanks for comment where in your opinion it could be on sale, I Think it forums of living history? Sorry, I missed your question earlier. Probably this helmet and bevor is useful? Many of the people here are SCA members. They can't fight in that equipment. Those of us that practice historical martial arts can't fight in that equipment, either. Fighting with open faced helmets isn't allowed in either of our rule sets. Well made, good ...

Dave, Irregular octagonal hafts seem to be the norm in surviving pole weapons. None are rectangular. Some are almost round. There is a recent study published on pole arms which delves into their construction and history. (m) I make ours from slightly rectangular stock and chamfer the corners. It isn...

A brief study of period gauntlets will lead to a conclusion that they are helpful limiting damage from incidental contact with blades. ...

The most common dye problem is excessive application. People keep pounding on coat after coat because they don't see what they expect. The excessive aniline pigment rests on the surface after the solvent evaporates. Even generous buffing won't eliminate the excess to the point that the finish treatm...

Actually Kel, looking at the museums photo, and the Madrid armour, the two are not that far off. At least the extant part of the torso harness. I wouldn't say it 'bears no resemblance'. No, no Bob. I meant to refer to the Pitbull creation at the start of the thread, not the Higgins display. My regr...

It is made out of a re-purposed 16th century pauldron in part, and it was done in the late 19th or early 20th century, I don't know if for Bashford Dean, Higgins himself, or someone else. It might be resin impregnated. The tannery rolls on a coating that improves abrasion and water resistance. I have heard it is done to hides with cosmetic blemishes. It will be fine for armour applications so long as you don't hope to dye it. If its really shiny, like plastic sheet, then it is not so...
