Re: What makes armour "English" in character?
Tobias Capwell's book on this very topic should be available within the year. It will be a distillation of his 1100 page opus on armour in the English style, which was his PhD dissertation. Its quite a resource if you can your hands on the thesis. The book should be awesome too. Simple observations?...

Once upon a time an enthusiastic fellow spent weeks of his spare time knitting a full hauberk of the heaviest AL wire links to suit his persona. He looked fantastic as he lined me up in the list. Unfortunately he misused his lovingly decorated round shield and took a sweeping tip shot from my greats...

I was sure I bought some but only the standard could be found. Since I'm about to pick up something else from Ice, I'll order the 1/2lb bag. I'm making pretty much the same project you are, so I'll split it with you. Postage shouldn't be much.

I have a few dozen late 70's Ral Parthas I'd like to be rid of, haven't touched in years. Some are painted like the large dragons and such but most aren't. Problem is, being a leather worker I can't use another belt. Hardware, maybe.

Thanks folks. I've decided to take the plunge as it were into the acid dip, flux and tin bar process. Tin bars are cheaper to import than electroplating kits.

Heredity is mostly the cause of gout these days, but some people have trigger foods. I've changed my diet, and keep looking for trigger foods, but I can't find anything in particular for myself. I have a commission for a reproduction of the 14thC buckler in the M-o-London. The client was fortunate to commission a massively delightful falchion and accessories from Tod. The buckler must therefore be on the same level of accuracy and bling. I am very happy with the raised boss and layered rims...

Yep back in the late 80s and 90s when I use to play SCA heavy here in An tir I did my share of denting 14 gage and better, but didn't think this thread was talking about SCA heavy combat. My comment referred to the history of blow escalation in the SCA and how it seems to be germinating in the N.Am...

@Mackenzie 1 You live in An Tir. Last time I visited there in 1990, I found their blow calibration on the high end compared to other places. It was much higher than it had been in 1982 when I lived there. I doubt there was much room to escalate since then so I doubt you could notice much difference ...

The rating on fencing masks is for the bib only and really has no relevance to us. I personal feel that NO fencing mask is sufficient for what we are doing. Get a Windrose or Tindal. You're incorrect. Specifically on which part? Or in general as it relates to SCA? Would you be so kind as to expand ...

If you really enjoy it how about something a little periodish... Windrose all the cool guy's are doing it. Nobody fencing to an unarmoured standard needs a full-on bascinet. If your group does, perhaps you could review the topic of "control" in free fencing. Weighing oneself down with arm...

When we looked into the available offerings years ago, the 350N vs 1600N ratings related only to the fabric bib. Any name brand mask rated for "three weapon" use has survived our sparring with AL wasters. The occasional dent but fully functional never the less. So called "coaches"...

Two comments. I agree with Suzerain that limewood/basswood or poplar is the way to go. I'm not so keen on the tongue and groove or dovetail joints. Joint the board edges adequately and use plenty resilient glue. No problem. Use hard Titebond type modern glues and it might be a problem in hard use. T...

I bought a spare blade when I tried SCA rapier twenty years ago. I'm sure its the oval profile 35+inch one that was approved back then and apparently its better than fair quality. I don't need it, perhaps you have something of equal value that I do?

Asbjorn, The Eastern Europeans have a thriving homemade armour, used/trade and custom armour scene. There are a lot more people in the Ukraine, Poland and Russia doing this kind of stuff than you'd expect given their average income is lower than that of many North Americans. On top of that they wear...

Our group normally trains with Swordcraft AL wasters, occasionally with Tinker Hanwei's we got to experiment with. I obtained a pair of the latest Knightshop longswords at the recent Dijon event. I think they are Mattel toys that add nothing to serious sparring; not in feeling, not in response to pr...
