Re: Knight's of Iron promotional video (jousting)

Kel, Were those the crazy Russians that were on the other side of the melee? And is it just me, or does Dave C. (I'm assuming its Dave since no one else is that tall) look like Godzilla in that grand bascinet? Looks like the event was a blast. Yeah, the local Skallagrims. They are a scream to hang ...

Those little action cams are a hoot!

John Woods & crew used one all over the OMSG camping event, even sticking it in the middle of armoured fights. His wife Liz put this together:

Re: Thrusting in tourney.

I've been reading this thread a couple days... with profound amusement. Slamming rounds into shield and sword, side to side... that's more elegant than tossing in the occasional thrust? Sorry, I'm lost here again . Standing toe to toe, pounding true edge blows on each other is better in some way tha...

What an intensely SCAdian question...

Isn't the sword in two hands enough? If you can't defend yourself with that, why do you bother using it?

Antique stores or flea markets. Find someone selling old brushes, toiletry kits, shoe horns et cetera. Look for button hooks - a personal item to do the dozens of buttons on shoes and overgarments popular at the end of the 19thC. Millions and millions of "Singer" brand flattened wire butto...

Hmm. Seems like a fun game - I'll play. Are you left handed? The rondel dagger hangs where a sword normally does. Back point bascinet with a globose klappvisor? +1 for Steerpike's comments about the arm harness. Do you plan to get a tightly fitted jupon? That garment seems to be ubiquitous in effigi...

No. Any GDFB dealer like AEMMA or Reliks can order them but no-one stocks them that I am aware of. Jerry Penner "The Chain Mail Guy" is the only source for premade rings & tools in Canada but only butted stuff. Icefalcon is the only source I know of that tends to stock rings most of th...

I'm just interested in the transcription, I'm not questioning the translation. Michael Chidester & friends built a resource for manuscripts like this. In the Vadi section, at the bottom, you will find this link. m It should provide you with what you seek. Interesting commentary, if a bit dated....

B.A.

Is your interest reading the original transcription in Italian or questioning the English translation from the Italian? Frankly I would trust Luca's English language skills edited by Greg Mele FFFAAARRR more than an internet translation program.

Dr Rogers, I read as many of your articles as I can obtain but I must admit to disappointment with this one. It seems largely a point of semantics to define the term "longbow" as the substantially more powerful version of the 14thC self bow. The community interested in the study this weapo...

I was staring at Toby's pieces of mail that hang off his legs. Eric did them with 3 rows of gilt rings on the edge and the rest blackened. The gilding seemed fine. Toby and his horse are doing a number on some of the mail itself, but the gilding looked fine. I am sure it will wear off at some point...

gilded mail edges

As I begin to modify a new haubergeon and standard, I am tempted to add a few rows of gilded rings. Aside from the bling factor, I suspect it might be worth the trouble to limit rust. Plain brass rings won't do as they oxidize too quickly. I don't mind spending a little money on some electroplate pr...

Re: Documentation requested: Gamboised cuisse

Gamboised cuisses seem common enough between 1340-1360 from Italy, Germany and the Low Countries. Considering England's deep connection with the latter within that period it would seem odd if the English didn't use the gamboised cuisse at all. Roel Renmans had some amazing photos of some figures fro...

Maybe none of the participants has had to trot in harness that long or fought with a closed visor very long? Deep cycle breathing is a trained attribute; never needed it - didn't learn it. Regardless, trotting in full kit is hard work. Nice data point for further discussion. 8)

Acetone or methyl ethyl ketone (found in nail polish remover) followed by a good rub with an oil cloth. Keep your kit oiled - it rusts less & tape won't stick to oily metal.
