The particular rule is: 2. The blade of an opponent’s weapon may not be grasped at any time, nor may it be trapped in contact with the fighter’s body as a means of preventing the opponent’s use of the weapon. Armored hands may grasp the haft of an opponent’s weapon. This implies strongly tha...

Easy solution. If you are employing the shield to body techniques or half-swording, bring a copy of that section of the rules with you. If someone calls you on it, show them the rule. At least around here, it's required to have the rules present anyway. This doesn't eliminate marshall stupidity, th...

When using SCA rules in this sort of conversation, it is insufficient to just explain the meaning. It is far better to actually quote the rule in question. Here it is: D. A shield or weapon may be used to displace, deflect, or immobilize an opponent’s shield or weapon, so long as such use does not...

My understanding is that you're not eligable to receive awards unless you are a paid member. That could just be Atenveldt though, or it could be wrong. Might just be Atenveldt, not SCA policy. It'd be just another hoop for Royalty to jump through before giving recognition, and there's some awards t...

Re: Getting Authorized for the SCA?

In general, you do not have to be a paid member to participate in the group, but it has its benefits. Aside from being an officer, not having to pay NMS fees, and authorization (in some kingdoms), and possible the newsletter (depending on the level of membership), what are the benefits? When I was ...

If you do it for some, but not for all, then it will be rightfully seen as insulting, for all who see you do it will question your motives: "Why would you give up the advantage to some but not to others?" And the answer will likely form in their minds, correctly or not, "Because he f...

There's a couple sets of mechanics to off-side shots, depending on what you're doing. The simplest is to throw your on-side shot, except for turning your hand palm down instead of palm up. This works if your normal mechanic is to move your hand in a straight line toward the center line of your oppon...

Your Grace, Most 'martial artists' can't fight for squat, regardless of style. It's Sturgeon's Law applied to people. The ones who can are the dangerous ones. The style doesn't so much matter, as Odawara says. It's too bad that you have such a low opinion/poor experience of kata, because I'd venture...

I've used welds on armour. Generally, it's either to make a grill, correct a mistake, or because the pattern I ripped off uses it. I've used O/A once on armour to fill in a crack. Mostly, I use flux core wire feed. I'll probably end up with a TIG because that fits a wide range of what I do (not just...
