@raito: Only light contact with the wood ones. The nylon one's are mid to lightish full contact. We switched after 3 people (including me) broke knuckles or fingers. Would this idea still work? Keep 'em comming Then... no. I haven't used any of the current nylon wasters, but the rods that were an 8...

1 pair of extra-large leather gloves. 1 pair well-fitting cotton gloves. Some pieces of good quality closed cell foam. You did say light contact. Cotton gloves on the inside, leather on the outside, foam between. Alternatively, I'd also put in some metal from the scrap bin on top of the foam, under ...

Unfortunately, enforcing that one rule is quite difficult in practice. Even with the following line in the governing documents: The Earl Marshal bears primary responsibility for promoting both the safety and the authenticity of the martial arts in the kingdom... I can fully understand Effingham's fr...

I use closed cell polyethylene foam from MSC. Absorbs force quite well, and lasts a decent amount of time. No foam lasts forever. And for the rest of you reading this thread trying to get an idea of where to get foam, a simple search will show that this topic has come around before. I'm not complain...

Thomas, The BOH armour is quite a bit higher class than what that anime stuff was probably based on, which appears to be a, uh, reinterpretation of some ashigaru stuff. 'Cept the ashigaru didn't divorce their kuzsazuri from their dou, nor really sew their sode on their sode, if you know what I mean....

Leo is right when he says there are advantages, but I don't quite agree with his reasoning. Nissan is right about pussyage. In the Middle, some time ago it was declared that a basket is part of the weapon, and is not armour. This made hand-blocking completely legal. It ia also true that dropping a w...

We all know that grabbing the haft is legal. But if someone grabs mine, that doesn't mean that I have somehow lost the freedom to move my weapon around. Is it really wrestling for me to attempt to maneuver my own weapon about? I don't think so, even when that maneuvering twists the other guy's wrist...

you could also call the weapon an Adaga, which is a 15th century moorish weapon which is a small shield in center, point on top end of stick and blade/point on bottom of stick The real question is when does the handhold become a shield vs a basket hilt what is the size limit, because if it is a shi...

Magents are used during harending, not during tempering. In general, simgple carbon steel lose their attraction to magnets when they reach critical temperature. In other words, when the thing becomes non-magentic, it's time to quench. It works because of the changes in the structure of the metal abo...

There used to be a lot of conveyor belt armour in Northshield, because the father of someone owned a conveyor belt factory or somesuch, and we got a lot of ends and offcuts. But the stuff was never a half-inch thick. And it didn't punch well at all, you had to drill it. The holes ended up with a fuz...

Re: Technical question about madus
Hello, If a Madu is a single handed weapon, is it required that it be less than 48" long. Not exactly, if I understand the intent of your question. It is allowed to use two handed weapons in a single hand. Weapons are inspected according to different criteria depending on length and usage. Whi...

Japanese armour could be broadly categorized into 4 types/periods: I'd like to slightly correct Otagiri's statement. Tanko and keiko are also Japanese armours, but are pre-Samurai armours. Unfortunately, many people refer to Samurai when they mean Japanese, much as they say Viking when the mean Nor...

Sounds awesome! Remember than any standard maze can be gotten through by consistently turning to either the right or the left. (That is, nothing but right turns, or nothing but left turns.) But there are non-standard mazes... (the easiest to envision is a maze that consists of a circular wall with ...

I've done this a few times in South Dakota. Lots of fun. Yes, we treat the stalks as solid. So visibility is down, but you can't get squashed up against a wall. I don't remember the scenario so much, except that it's res, and mostly deals with getting to a cleared out section in the middle of the ma...
