Shirt in addition to undertunic, tunic, and cote What period are we talking about? In general, my understanding is the layers go- Dark Ages- undertunic, tunic, cloak 12th/13th C- undertunic, tunic, overtunic (overgown, gardecorps, etc.) Early 14th. C- Shirt, gown/tunic/early cotehardie sort of thin...

Far be it for me to contest Wikipedia or BlackAdder as historical references!

You might want to have a look at Janet Arnold though.

Irish, if you want to attach a codpiece to your hose, go for it.

Sorry, I've been out of the office all afternoon. Is this a historical method or a modern solution to the problem? It is an educated conjecture based on the number of bodies found in Wisby with small brooches over the hipbones. This arrangement is also seen in other medieval burials, leading to the ...

Just thought of this- I have a friend whose husband swears by baseball pants- won't consider wearing anything else. If accuracy isn't an issue, they're worth a try.

Just a thought.

Yeah- chausses = hosen- you know, leg covering thingies. Have you tried putting the buckle on the side of your belly, rather than directly in front? That might solve the digging in problem. The swordbelt tie idea would probably work as well. Tucking the shirt inside the braies gives you a layer of c...

Mac attaches his chausses to a deerskin belt worn *over* the braies: the braies have a drawstring which he makes tight enough to hold them up long enough to position the belt over them. He affixes his chausses to the belt with small brooches 'a la the Wisby finds, then tightens the belt to hold ever...

Ancient Danish Textiles from Bogs and Burials: A Comparative Study of Costume and Iron Age Textiles- Margrethe Hald 1980

Does anyone have this book?

Is it a good reference book for the period?

Is it worth having?

I hope someone knows because the last I can track them to is the Landesmuseum in Schleswig (is this Schloss Gottorp?) where they are being studied with a view to a more comprehensive re-publication. But I have been unable to confirm this.

Thorsbjerg trousers- which museum?

Can anyone direct me to the museum which currently holds the textile remains from Thorsbjerg Mose? It seems the finds from the Thorsbjerg bog were dispersed to various German and Danish museums when Denmark lost Schleswig-Holstein to Prussia in 1864. I am specifically trying to track down the Thorsb...

I am familiar with the reconstructions, however I'm looking for information on the original because I want to use the same number of panels the original had, if it is possible to determine that information.

Info on Birka hat

Birka grave 958- Arbmans "Birka - die Gräber", page 383 Can anyone tell me if the hat from this grave had 4 panels, or 6? I've seen "reconstructions" with 4, and I've seen "reconstructions" with 6, and I'd like to know how many the original had, if it is possible to determine that information. Than...

Addendum to address justus' point about comfort- I think comfort is a cultural habit. I would be very uncomfortable if I had to wear a headscarf/wimple all the time. If I had grown up in a Muslim culture, I would be equally uncomfortable without it. English women wear hats, American women as a rule ...

Another argument is that all of the coifs and hair in the Mac are exactly alike with no deviation at all. I think this can be attributed to the comparitively primitive artistic techniques of the time which yields a rather cartoonish rendering of life. By the 15th C. art had advanced and you see indi...

Have you found a lot of untied coifs Tim? After all the images I looked at this weekend the only one I can remember seeing untied is the guy sowing seed in the Tres Riches Heures, which is early 15th C. (c. 1415).
