Sorry, I've been out of the office all afternoon. Is this a historical method or a modern solution to the problem? It is an educated conjecture based on the number of bodies found in Wisby with small brooches over the hipbones. This arrangement is also seen in other medieval burials, leading to the ...

Yeah- chausses = hosen- you know, leg covering thingies. Have you tried putting the buckle on the side of your belly, rather than directly in front? That might solve the digging in problem. The swordbelt tie idea would probably work as well. Tucking the shirt inside the braies gives you a layer of c...

Mac attaches his chausses to a deerskin belt worn *over* the braies: the braies have a drawstring which he makes tight enough to hold them up long enough to position the belt over them. He affixes his chausses to the belt with small brooches 'a la the Wisby finds, then tightens the belt to hold ever...

Thorsbjerg trousers- which museum?
Can anyone direct me to the museum which currently holds the textile remains from Thorsbjerg Mose? It seems the finds from the Thorsbjerg bog were dispersed to various German and Danish museums when Denmark lost Schleswig-Holstein to Prussia in 1864. I am specifically trying to track down the Thorsb...

Info on Birka hat
Birka grave 958- Arbmans "Birka - die Gräber", page 383 Can anyone tell me if the hat from this grave had 4 panels, or 6? I've seen "reconstructions" with 4, and I've seen "reconstructions" with 6, and I'd like to know how many the original had, if it is possible to determine that information. Than...

Glad you enjoyed wearing it, I certainly enjoy looking at the photo. I have loads of wools, so if you decide you'd like one in wool just let me know. We'll be happy to help. One thing though- the Rockette impression will be completely ruined if you don't do something about that SMOKER'S COIF! (figur...

Addendum to address justus' point about comfort- I think comfort is a cultural habit. I would be very uncomfortable if I had to wear a headscarf/wimple all the time. If I had grown up in a Muslim culture, I would be equally uncomfortable without it. English women wear hats, American women as a rule ...

Another argument is that all of the coifs and hair in the Mac are exactly alike with no deviation at all. I think this can be attributed to the comparitively primitive artistic techniques of the time which yields a rather cartoonish rendering of life. By the 15th C. art had advanced and you see indi...

Plague of coifs being used incorrectly in the 14th and 15th C. Yes indeed, that would be me guv. Mea Culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I am trying my best to stem this plague with a dose of powerful counter mojo. My efforts have been called "overzealous", but being part terrier, I take this as a c...

Awesome! I wish I had time to make felt hats from scratch. I've had pretty good luck messing with the felt hats we offer- if you soak them in water you can stretch/shape/reblock them to a number of different shapes. When they're dry you can trim the brim to shape, cut it, stitch it, add a lining, ha...

They *could* have- but did they? Why is it depicted that way and not both ways if it was worn both ways? You *could* wear a baseball cap with your suit to the office...... or you could wear your Rangers jersey under your suit jacket....... or you could wear your wingtips with your basketball outfit....

Have you found a lot of untied coifs Tim? After all the images I looked at this weekend the only one I can remember seeing untied is the guy sowing seed in the Tres Riches Heures, which is early 15th C. (c. 1415). I think all the ones in the Mac Bible and Manessa are tied or otherwise fastened in so...

In the image Tim provided (the Lisle Psalter) there are 3 crown wearers in the left panel. It may be significant that the coif wearer is hawking; I noticed in the Manessa images that the people hawking had hats with strings, where I didn't find hats with strings on anyone else, even if the shape of ...

I honestly didn't put this info up for commercial purposes- some of these hats are EASY to make out of the felt hat we offer. With the "make it yourself- teaching" focus of the SCA, I think you guys should start bugging your local laurelate to offer classes on hatmaking!!! How cool would it be if yo...
