Jeff's going to have to add some details as he's the man who writes the rules and wields the calipers, but let's see what I do know: Basic rules: Jeff reminds me that they are down just now so I can't direct you to them. However, it is basically no holds barred, to 5 good blows (as called by the Mar...

'There is generally a paucity of sources of all kinds for dress in England at this date, in particular the indespensible domestic accounts and inventories; there are few for men and almost none for women, of all ranks. References have to be secured from wills -again, there are comparitively few for ...

New from HE- 15th C. Pollaxe simulators
In another thread, d-farrell asked about the pollaxes we use for our tournaments. We've been intending to put them up and have not gotten around to it, so this seems like a good time to get off my butt and do it. Right. So what we have here is a very realistic looking 15th C. pollaxe simulator. It i...

Wow. These hoods are a big subject and worthy of a paper of their own. Having spent most of yesterday goofing off I'll have to give you a quick answer. If you're looking for a more involved one speak up and either I'll get back to it later or maybe Karen and her fantastic references or someone else ...

Girl clothes- *SIGH* I can't even remember the last time I made girl clothes, seems I spend all of my time making boy clothes and horsie stuff. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, I really do like well dressed men and horses! But it would be nice to have the time to play around with a butterfly henn...

I didn't ask, but my guess is the image is 1490-1500 Flemish. The headgear isn't a veil, it is the evolutionary descendant of the winged hood under discussion- in a very general sense the evolution goes something like this: 'London' type hood winged hood winged hood with *really* long wings hybrid h...

I'm way too busy sitting here pulling the wings off flies to really jump back in here but this has turned into an absolutely astonishing exercise in circular logic, double talk, ignoring points previously made and the visual evidence. A woman wearing one [winged hood] would have a wool dress, and th...

Hey Catarina-
OT, but if you don't have it, you should ask Santa for a copy of
Historic Textile Patterns by Friedrich Fischbach
It is fabulous, and IMHO, a real must have. I have 2 copies and use them *constantly*.

Hey, far be it for me to dis dead dinosaurs. At this point in our game I'm all about the effect and don't worry so much about molecular composition. I've worked with both 100% silk brocade in a 15th C. pattern and various degrees of composed trees/cotton/dead dinosaur in vaguely historical patterns,...

Ha Bob, you crack me up. I would say the dozens of images of (clearly) non-peasant women wearing a hood like that would qualify as 'proving beyond a reasonable doubt'. But if you want to keep insisting we're all wrong, don't let me dissuade you. Catarina, is your gown cloth of gold? Doesn't look li...

Heheh, I stop watching this thread (when it became painfully clear that Chef was going to stick to his POV long past the point he had been proven wrong beyond a reasonable doubt) and all the fun happens. Serves me for having a short attention span. Shucks. Anyway, Catarina, I don't know you from Ada...

We always used our lamps as Endre describes, with the wick poking up out of the liquid without support. I understand there is a wire/clip/hanger gizmo used on the glass lamps, as the flame laying on the glass can be problematic, but it's not a problem with the pottery ones. The flame only burns down...

I think lighting levels are relative. We're used to near daylight levels of illumination available to us right up until the moment we turn the switch on our bedside reading light. I think our ancestors got by on much less light. I remember going into the cow barn during morning (pre-dawn) milking as...
