Matt for the past 4 years I have been training under one of Pauls long time students. He (my Knight) has taken Paul's ideas and techniques and in Paul's on words "gone the farthest with them" meaning he has turned them into a significant training curriculum. What Sarnac said is spot on. Paul is teac...

3. Squires, how did you become one? I approached my knight after having trained with him and his wife for about two years. For him it was a mere formality, for me it was a leap of faith that he would accept me. 4. Fighters, how do you feel about the peerage of Chivalry? I look to the Peerage for ex...

I just got two from him, there was a bit of a wait as they were apparently out of stock - though listed as in stock on the site. I sure as heck wouldnt want to go out on the field wearing a 16ga helmet. It is acceptable for the average force level of rebated combat, but the average SCA rattan combat will easily dent that, and there will not be enough mass to soak up the inertia of the blow delivered by a rattan stick.

Oddly enough I have that very sword. Bought pre internaet and for a great deal more. The pommel is threaded onto the tang which is roughly pencil sized and shaped right up to the shoulders of the blade. The blade itself is springy and thin, giving it similar consistency to a fencing foil. Your milag...

There are various theories on the appropriate style of shield to begin with. Really it boils down to what people around you are teaching. I like people to start with a small round, I prefer center mounted but strapped is ok to. I feel that you learn active defense better, and develop your perception...

Earl Valsgard Stonecleaver has something like that. It is white about 3/8" thick and fairly dense, looks sort of like a nylon relative, it is dense so you get good absorption of the weapons inertia, and it pretty much looks indestructable.

A question of durability: shield materials

I currently use a round shield made from 1/4" plywood riveted to a frame work of 1/8" aluminum of an unknown alloy and temper. It is quite beefy and is only now after two years of fairly constant fighting starting to look like a sombrero. However I am undergowing a persona shift and starting to look...

Caid had a similar rule iirc, it strikes me that they were written during a period when alternative shield materials were more difficult to come by for the average fighter and were thus frowned upon and discriminated against or is that equal opportunity at work there. Any way I never saw it enforced...

I agree. The poles used in pole vaulting are spun carbon fiber - at least the one I have is. I thought it would make a really nifty spear so did it up and toted it down to war.
