I use a silicon based rust inhibitor... works great so far. It isn't sticky or slimy and doesn't stink.

"Quick and Dirty: 1/2 diameter 30" hardwood shaft, about 1/2lb, 18g arrowhead, 300FPS " Thats a ridiculously huge arrow imo What are the deminsions of a medieval arrow? Not what are the dimisions of what i can make now. Hard to say for certain. The oldest known arrow is the abbey arrow found in Wes...

At the same time that mass will slow down the speed of the arrow much quicker than something lighter. Actually, th opposite is true. A heavier arrow will retain more of its original energy at maximum range... momentum and all. A heavier arrow will have less initial velocity thoug... though it will ...

Re: Buckler rolled edge. Is this presentable?
Ok well after rolling the edges on the breastplate I'm working on I figured I'd give it a try on the buckler blanks I make and possibly offer finished ones. I'm not entirely happy with this subsequent ones will probably be a little better. But would this be considered a presentable edge? Pay no att...

Do you know of references from 1340-70ish? I was not aware of any, always thought they fell out of use for a few decades... for some reason. I really have spent about zero time looking into the subject in the past few years. Could be entirely wrong. Good to know if there is a solid track record of ...

Nice workmanship! If I had any suggestions, it would be to go for a more "D" shaped buckle on the belt, but I'm not an expert, so your shape may be just fine... it just struck me as the only "modern" touch to the belt. I like the bevelling on the edges of the plates. Is that based on an historical p...

I think it's generally accepted that great bascinets are considered tournament helms, usually associated with melee or foot combat but applied to the joust with different visors, and that their use wouldn't be appropriate on the battlefield where peripheral vision and awareness of the enemy is para...

Re: Great helm over bascinet. How?
Specifically for SCA combat, how do you use a great helm over a bascinet? Must the bascinet have a removable face plate? Or no face plate to begin with. Historical bascinets tended to fit closer than most in the SCA, so keep that in mind. You'll want a bascinet that fits YOU well, with as little pa...

Very nice Jeff. Summer is the terrible time for me buying stuff. Are you planning on doing some more of these later? I would be very interested in picking one up in the fall, or just before Christmas. I sometimes travel to Southern Maryland and could possible pick it up there, or I could just have y...

I really LOVE that helm... and if I hadn't just gotten screwed by property taxes, I'd be all over this. Did you know that in my county, even if the assesor makes errors, you are liable for the taxes? They fix 'em for next year, but you HAVE to pay them this year. How to lose $3000 without even trying!

$495,000 is a STEAL for that place, even in EUROs. I've seen some estates here in Ohio for around that much (couple million!) that don't have anywhere near that amout of living space or acreage. Either the realestate values between here and there are very different, or there is something seriously ...

a Yew more or less D-sectioned longbow is the classic bow for England and france in this period (besides crossbows, ofcourse). Other woods were used, such as Ash and Elm. These can be much more affordabel, so look into those. Osage Orange, while an American wood and incorrect historically speaking, ...

This is my Edward, the Black Prince armour, that I'm very proud of. Next to it is my Arms and Armour repro, Black Prince sword with period pilgrim badges, one of his seals, and 2 miniatures that I've obtained. That's COOL. I love Black Prince period stuff and I like him as a romantic figure. But wh...
