I use a silicon based rust inhibitor... works great so far. It isn't sticky or slimy and doesn't stink.

At the same time that mass will slow down the speed of the arrow much quicker than something lighter. Actually, th opposite is true. A heavier arrow will retain more of its original energy at maximum range... momentum and all. A heavier arrow will have less initial velocity thoug... though it will ...

Re: Buckler rolled edge. Is this presentable?

Ok well after rolling the edges on the breastplate I'm working on I figured I'd give it a try on the buckler blanks I make and possibly offer finished ones. I'm not entirely happy with this subsequent ones will probably be a little better. But would this be considered a presentable edge? Pay no att...

Do you know of references from 1340-70ish? I was not aware of any, always thought they fell out of use for a few decades... for some reason. I really have spent about zero time looking into the subject in the past few years. Could be entirely wrong. Good to know if there is a solid track record of ...

Nice workmanship! If I had any suggestions, it would be to go for a more "D" shaped buckle on the belt, but I'm not an expert, so your shape may be just fine... it just struck me as the only "modern" touch to the belt. I like the bevelling on the edges of the plates. Is that based on an historical p...

Thanks for your thoughts Jeff. I know that visibility in my Hounskull is... ummm... less than ideal. And head flexibility with a padded aventail isn't ideal either. I could definitely see raising the visor, or even removing it entirely if in a tough fight on foot.

I think it's generally accepted that great bascinets are considered tournament helms, usually associated with melee or foot combat but applied to the joust with different visors, and that their use wouldn't be appropriate on the battlefield where peripheral vision and awareness of the enemy is para...

Re: Great helm over bascinet. How?

Specifically for SCA combat, how do you use a great helm over a bascinet? Must the bascinet have a removable face plate? Or no face plate to begin with. Historical bascinets tended to fit closer than most in the SCA, so keep that in mind. You'll want a bascinet that fits YOU well, with as little pa...

They fix 'em for next year, but you HAVE to pay them this year. How to lose $3000 without even trying!

ummm....no.

It's a mis-mash of vaguely historical designs spanning a 300 year period. For example, the helmet is a late-14th century pigface bascinet (thoug it is missing the aventail) and the breastplate is later period (late 16th-17th century?) .
