Cheers all. The shirt is galvy and is dusty gray... been lying around a while. There is one patch of rust on it, but not serious at all. Tossing the thing around in a bag for a few minutes ought to take care of most of the problems. The rust MIGHT require a pass or two with a brass grill brush. It's...

I find this a strange argument. Why is that those who want the SCA to be an anything goes kind of organization see themselves as having less of an agenda than those who want the SCA to adhere to stricter sense of the medieval? Aren't BOTH trying to make the SCA what they want it to be? Or is it just...

Strongbow, you said it yourself... the Mary Rose bows might look crude to modern eyes... these bows looked crude to MEDIEVAL eyes... I'm not sure what you mean. I think Gerald would have had limited experience of the bows used by the peasantry. He was probably used to seeing the polished, finely fi...

I should have noted that the passage by Foster and Hoare is mistranslated in one phrase. However, it is not wrong when it describes Welsh bows as "made of wild elm, unpolished, rude and uncouth." As Russ said, this is not the so-called longbow of which we are familiar. I'm not sure why you'd say th...

Armor I have a ways to go, and to be honest, I will be waiting for the spring steels until I am sure I can fight at the level that warrants the expense. I do not wish to question your choice of path (that's up to you), but I'm curious as to why you think you need to fight at any particular level to...

While i will not argue that Wales was the starting point for the longbow, i still hold that its important role in the english medieval armies in battles against the scots and french, came to be because of Welsh use of this weapon and significant proficiency with it, and the decisions of english kin...

Yep. What Russ said. This is a brief summary of the relevant points. m That page is incorrect in the translation of Gerald. The latin is clear. Foster and Hoare are WRONG, the first translation is correct There is NO REASON to believe the welsh used anything other than the longbow. There is NO EVID...

Could you use jewelers needle nose pliers? Havent seen this stuff up close. The bear does have connections to a medieval tale of one of the imaginary ancestors of the Beauchamp Earls of Warwick. Hey Bob, Do you mean imaginary in terms of "made up by modern folks" or do you mean imaginary in that the Beauchamps claimed this ancestor who never really existed (like all the Ro...

Josh- I believe yours and mine are the only two he's done so far. Yours is pretty much an SCA version of mine, and I believe yours is actually the mild steel prototype Mark did before starting on mine in stainless. Strongbow- The only other bit that I have now is the cuirass. Mark posted pics of it...

Hello, I'm very interested in the possibility of getting one of Von Sussen's bascinets, which he sells through his website and on Ebay, occasionally. If you're going to lace, just make lamellar. The Wisby finds had lamellar, regular coats of plates and even some coats of plates apparently made from old lamellar plates, but the later were rivetted to the foundation garment. If you're going to lace, there is not need for the foundation garment as y...
