There's a whole chapter on this sort of stuff in Allan Williams' "the knight and the blast furnace" ISBN 1385-7827, more info . Beware that "force" is not the right thing to ask for. What defeats armour is energy, not force. Energy is related to the mass of the projectile, and the speed of the proj...

Of the gaunts you posted, the ones sold by Therion (made by Vista) are the most accurate, though they lack the knuckle-rider plate. As for swords.... You can't go wroing with eith A&A or Albion. I think Albion's swords are slightly more accurate, but then again, they tend to be pricier. Both of the ...

Hal: Agreed. To everything, but particularly the performance issue. If an object does not perform its duty, it's useless. This guy: http://www.angustrimswords.com/index.htm Makes swords via stock removal. They are widely accepted among sword enthusiasts as being some of the best performing western ...

If you're doing compound curves on arm harness like Wil described then you're really doing awesome work that exceeds the norm. Are you doing case-fit greaves? A Compagnon of mine is looking for a set and since you're in town it might behoove you both to meet. John Jehan de Pelham, esquire and serva...

I've been thinking about the tailoring. We're making them with long fitted sleeves and want to tailor it to our torso's as well, does anyone have any ideas for that? Should it fit like a tunic? I don't make a lot of clothes or anything so I'm not exactly sure how to pattern it to tailor it. Doug Mo...

I made one just like it and the local marshall bounced it since it didn't give 1/2" over the face of the mace. So check on your local interpretation of the mace. My principality Marshall (Hi Hrogn!) Thought it was ok but according the letter of the rules it doesn't pass in Avacal. I don't get it. H...

well, in the Battle of Wisby book based on his finds Bengt made his replica's using a leather base ..... although he did also discuss whether cloth or leather would have been used. Leathers nice looking though & that counts for a lot ! I believe that the early preliminary analysis suggested leather...

So German Gothic armour is really thicker than contemporary Italian plate? The italian armet I handled last year weighed 4 pounds. Very interesting data point, and a great way to modify my armor spiel: "The difference between my smooth italian armor and this fellow's ornately ridged german-style ar...

I'm about 5'11", so it'd pull up on your thigh some. The sleeves, however, should fit strong unless you have unusually long arms for your height. Also, depending on how long your legs are, it might ride a bit low on the thigh. aS I said, I wore them with padded cuisses, so that wasn't an issue with ...

Some 13th century stuff for sale
I have some of my old 13th century kit for sale, since i now do 14th century. First up: Great helm. A mid-late 13th century great helm loosely based on the Mac Bible. It was made by Kirby Wise in the late 80's. It's SCA lagal (14G sides, 12 G top) with a low maintenence forge black finish. It has gi...

Yes, all those thingsa appear about 1320ish. Here's a good pic of a guy about that time. The coat of plates would still be hidden under a loose surcoat at this time. By the 1330's the "classic" 14th century look begins to emerge (bascinet, shorter mail, transition from the surcoat to the jupon, move...

The word "hoggspjotl" ( missing the various accent marks, sorry ) appears in Norse literature and according to Vigfusson translates to "hewing spear". Alas, it's never described. But the ability to cut or hack seems to be implied by the name, at least. ( Most spears can cut or slash, I think the fa...
