I'm not sure about the earlier 16th century, but for the Irish wars of the Elizabethan period there's an Osprey book. Look at the "Image of Ireland" by John Derrick. (1581) m It's a short book from the late 16th century with illustrations of Irish native troops as well as English troops. F...

Don, I searched the AA for old threads about jacks and SCA fighting. The opinions seemed to be that even many layers of fabric quilted together woud not offer enough protection. If the fabric used padding or stuffing, however, then it could be protective enough.

Finally looked at Karen Larsdatter's pages, and they're very helpful. It was good to see period images of a simple black belt quiver, as I've seen those for sale from traditional archery vendors. A few observations. On the link to the Hennessy Book of Hours, the images have been removed; the text is...

Quilted jack for C&T: how many layers?

I'm considering sewing a quilted jack for Cut and Thrust. It has to be thick enough to take the sting out of thrusts and percussive cuts but thin enough to let me feel hits. I have plenty of mid-weight linen and I also have linen-cotton-blend canvaslike material. I wondered whether 7 or 8 layers mig...

The SCA-heavy cabasset is very impressive and unusual. How much did that sell for? How much did it weigh? It looks like a good design for someone wanting ventilation, visibility, and less weight.

I'm interested in starting SCA target archery, and I want to investigate my options for period bows. My persona is a Scottish Borderer of the 1540s.
