My other game, Dagorhir, gets a lot of the teenagers who might have gone to the SCA years ago. Dagorhir has focused on recruiting and on being friendly to newcomers and easy to join. The SCA might profit by examining what characterizes recreational games that successfully recruit teenagers and adapt...

Finally looked at Karen Larsdatter's pages, and they're very helpful. It was good to see period images of a simple black belt quiver, as I've seen those for sale from traditional archery vendors. A few observations. On the link to the Hennessy Book of Hours, the images have been removed; the text is...

Quilted jack for C&T: how many layers?
I'm considering sewing a quilted jack for Cut and Thrust. It has to be thick enough to take the sting out of thrusts and percussive cuts but thin enough to let me feel hits. I have plenty of mid-weight linen and I also have linen-cotton-blend canvaslike material. I wondered whether 7 or 8 layers mig...

Recommended books on archery/bows?
If I want to find out who did archery, what equipment they used, archery in war vs. archery in hunting vs. target archery, etc., what should I read?

You're right, it's listed as a kettle helm. But it has the ridge and point on the top characteristic of a cabasset. Any idea how much that helmet weighs, or how much it would cost?

16th-century light bows: questions
I'm interested in starting SCA target archery, and I want to investigate my options for period bows. My persona is a Scottish Borderer of the 1540s. What sorts of light bows were used for hunting and target archery? Were there hand-spanned crossbows? Were there recurves in Western Europe at all? Wer...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/thoog/1237451184/in/set-72157600330606163/ The Sir Giles Capel tournament helmet at the Met has what I think is a very attractive perforated faceplate. Many of the later closed helms (i.e., 16th century) seem to have combinations of holes and slits. Some of the later he...

Target archery/rapier CA questions
Disclaimer: I have no intention of getting on the rattan field, so don't jump on me. I was able to try target archery last weekend at the Storvik Baronial Birthday in northern Atlantia. It's something I might be interested in pursuing. If I gained some skill at it, I might want to bring a bow to rap...

I suppose increasing bow poundages, however, would make the arrows even more dangerous. The arrows would be getting shot with more force, hence they'd be flying farther and hitting with more force and would be more likely to cause an injury. How thickly padded are the arrowheads? In Dagorhir (foam-p...

I did an internet search on clickers. They're professional equipment---large, heavy, and expensive. Simple hand cutting would certainly be cheaper, though slower. Regarding Torvaldr, perhaps someone near him could volunteer as his assistant to help him keep up with e-mails and orders and fill in whe...
