What about Historic Martial Arts? I don't believe it's a competitive activity in the SCA; I believe it falls under Arts and Sciences. However, it might allow more options for armor and weapons. It might not be full force and full speed, however.

Why would any breastplate, including the one pictured, ride up on a mounted man? The weight would be pulling it downward.

Baron A, perhaps I'm overcomplicating things, yes. But I also believe that the expert advice is assuming some skills and knowledge that I simply do not have. I think some experts assume that people have modern skills and just need to know how to transfer them to period projects. I, on the other hand...

Aaron, will you and Maureen be attending Highland River Melees the second weekend in June? It's in Hagerstown (MD). Shouldn't be more than 1 to 2 hours' drive via I-70. I'm hoping to go myself; perhaps we can camp near each other.

Maeryk and other woodworkers: a bit off topic, but if you haven't read the book "Before the Mast: Life and Death Aboard the Mary Rose," I recommend it. Great assemblage of 16th-century carpenters' tools and numerous chests and boxes of varying quality, plus a few pieces of furniture. The s...

Well...I may use wood screws instead, since I'm going for a beginner's project with many compromises. I'll use black screws and maybe hide them with wood putty.

Any ideas on reinforcement of a chest? Steel strapping? Battens inside?

Recommendations for nails for simple woodworking?

I have NO woodworking experience, but I think I might be able to hammer nails into boards. I'd like to make a totally simple wood box for camping out of boards. Probably pine or something else that's light and inexpensive. This isn't for a cooler chest; this would be for clothes and such. This would...

Researching household goods (query for Peder et al.)

Peder suggested in another thread that it's essential to research what people actually owned, as opposed to making assumptions. For some periods, one can find wills with inventories. I'm interested in 16th-century Scotland, and I found a site with wills and other genealogical records for 1500 onward...

If the weather turns nasty? Look up some of the old topics on "tents" in this forum. For myself, I'd sleep in my car or maybe set up my little nylon tent underneath the canvas tarp where it wouldn't be visible (sorry, Jehan). Gobae's A-frame setup, shown in the Portable Holes topic, looks ...

Thank you for your explanation, Jehan. I understand your position. Let me give you the context for what I'm trying to do. My persona as it stands now is a countrywoman of the Scottish Borders in the 1540s, a period of active warfare between Scotland and England. I'm not a soldier; therefore, a "...

Instead of the white plastic fencing plastron, what about a custom-fitted leather plastron? Heavy leather could be wetted, shaped to the body, and then hardened, perhaps? Schmitthenner also makes some hardened leather chest armor for women, in large sizes.

Just looked at the Grayline linens site. The site could be much more informative. Fabrics-store.com (the company in California) has exact weights for all the fabrics, and thread counts for many of them. They also carry linen up to 7 ounces and more, and have great deals on swatches.

I see your point, Endre. I'm just not sure the book, or at least the English translation, is meant to be taken with 100% seriousness. At the very least, there seems to be some fun at the expense of early medieval Christians.

An interesting novel from the women's point of view is The Thrall's Tale, by Judith Lindbergh (if I remember the name correctly). It's about the colonization of Greenland.
