period japanese helmets often weigh as much as 20 lbs. They balance towards the rear due to the weight of the shikoro, which are those plates that go aroud the back and protect the neck. There is a lot of variation, but most japanese helmets are quite heavy. Logan, not quite sure why you needed to a...

Jehan, Its not so bad. I fight in exactly the same gauntlets you use. One of the two existing pairs of John Gruber finger gauntlets. I fight every week against unpadded polearms and in addition, I am apparantly a moron as I cannot consistently stop blocking on my hands. Sir bryce de Byram smashed me...

The tuchux charity tournament supports research for a cure for breast cancer. If you like boobs you should fight in this tourny. it works like this: You pay 5 bucks and get assigned to one of four lists. there is a big pile of weapons in the center. It is a bear pit and when you are up you draw a ca...

Elias, You may as well leave your sword and dagger on the side lines as you must take your bow there before you can use them. With Siloflex you can use a 45 lb bow. With shafted arrows only 30. If you hit people anywhere other than the face 90% of your shots will probably be ignored, so work on accu...

Sir Corby, As to your technical objections, reasonable people may disagree, but your points are not without merit. In terms of aesthetics I believe we are of one mind. Your sticks should go with your suit. And you should make weapons that look cool. Pros:I get to use a polearm with a four foot blade...

Sir Corby opined: I usually start with the bit about those freaky poles that are 6'+ long with 3 feet of blade. Dumb etc Well that describes every nagamaki ever made both real and SCA representation. Those Japanese fellows sure did make a lot of them. I suppose they found them useful. There are exta...

rising to the bait
Ok Sir Corby, I'll bite. If the weapon you are recreating is as the nagamaki in the attached photo, an unpadded stick feels more like the real article. As to safety, it depends where you get hit. The kinetic energy density of the weight of the padded head will be more prone to result in neck injury ...

I need it like a drug. Hello, my name is Nissan and I am a fightaholic. (hello Nissan) If I don't fight for a while I become even more of an asshole than usual. My wife tells me to go fight. The focus and clarity it brings are a joy. No thoughts of work, mortgage, family responsibility can intrude. ...

I give a yell sometimes in mid beat to distract my opponent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it dont. I also talk to my opponent and frequently make fun of the way they are dressed, or tell them their heraldry makes them look stupid. But I get all my chops from watching anime. I soon as I get that fly...

Greadwinne, Don't be too quick to ascribe our brave behavior to honour. I waited till the end to have my boy count because those are the guys who got paid. heres a little tale of royalist perfidy to chill your heart: I put prizes on the heads of a select few royalists in the last feild battle, Felix, Malcolm, Darius, Straum, Vitus, and Valhalric. Only one bounty was collected. Valhalric was slain by his countyman Michael of Bedford to collect the prize...
