The leather reference is from the Tain bo Culaigh, in a description of the arming of Cuhullan. (pardon mispellings) It does not refer to bands of leather however, but an 'apron' of leather, as I recollect. well the second doesn't resembe the first picture at all. the second picture's plate over lap just a little bit i would say 16 guage would work. a lil heavy but it would work. 2 layers of canvas weight linen should work good :)
