You could also just look up some art from that time period and copy that design.. Something like the greek urns with athletes and stuff on, but roman style..

I think that for the hagaren auto-mairu you should find a talented armourer in your area so you can get custom fitted on site. You want it to be very tight and its hard to get that fit without actually having the person who is going to wear the piece to fit it on during the production.

If you have holes that are a bit bigger in your anvil (lets say I would have to grind away at least 4 millimeters), would it be possible to fill these holes with a welder and then grind and polish the surface? I would only use the anvil for cold work, no real blacksmithing..

heh, I have been working on a design for a similar project for about a year now, your idea is not that far from mine.. =) I have also been able to work around the breast deflection issue and have worked out a both period and functional solution to it.. =) Gonna post pictures if I ever get to work on...
