Re: How do you raise a pigface visor from a welded cone?
Pigface is the long, pointy nose ones. Traffic cone visor might be a more obvious description. The rounded face was reffered to as a starting shape to raise the cone from I believe.

There is also the option to use a drawing tablet and draw in vector format right in to the computer. Not much harder then to use pen and paper.

Mac,
Send everything to me, I can digitalize it for you.
I would like to buy a pack and have it sent to me already printed on paper and in a nice format rather then downloading it and going trough the hassle of having to print to scale and so fort.

Re: Let's talk about templates.
I have started scanning my finished templates, make vector files and then put them in printable pdf files that are the right scale. I then print them on regular paper and dab the lines with acetone, transfering the printed lines to the steel.

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Ah, yes, my suggestion is five rivets on each side of the hinge, four like on the statue, faux, and one in the middle that does all the job. Perhaps the four corner ones should be smaller then the middle. This might be too "artsy" for you perhaps. I would do it as a compromize between the common way...

Re: Modifying a Breastplate
I think you should make a full size mockup if possible. Do a body trace and a breastplate tracing that you can cut up and fiddle with. The breastplate should get a decent appearance, but it also needs to fit your body.

Looking good. I would say that looking from the view where you stare right at the point of the elbow, I feel that you have exaggerated the shape at the wrist. I would not have shaped it that agressively there. This is not my century however so dont trust me. I believe your elbow could do with a more...

Re: Modifying a Breastplate
I would just trim it to the approperiate height and fix the shape of it. Not cut it in half and try to make a split breast of it. Cutting with a jigsaw or a cutoff wheel or similar, not a shear since that would disturbe the shape of the piece a lot. Make drawings of what you have and what you want, ...

Re: Review of Armstreet full suits
Lloyd, I am afraid your straw man questions are irrelevant to my post. I dont think that anyone doing armour based on the 14th century should waste time and energy on something that is purely a fantasy addition to a piece. This is an active, intentional step away from accuracy wich is a bad thing ac...

I believe patterns are very useful on many levels. The utter newbie needs to start somewhere and I believe most start from a pattern they found online. For me, I would love patterns of more intricate pieces then the ones presented online since I can take a lot of information from a pattern that I ca...

I have no experience of alginate so I cant help you there. With plaster you need to make sure it does not stick, especially not to body hair and I have some hairy calfes. Shaving would be a good thing to guarantee that the cast gets as tight and accurate as possible and it would probably be a source...

Yes, it is suprising to see so pretty hems but the not so flattering central point decorations. Its a pity they did not spend a bit more love on those, it would have lifted the whole piece a lot.

I have not reached the point where it is time to make an attempt in steel yet. I will however do some proper attempts in cardboard soon. I now try to work things out to a point where I actually understand the piece before I do it. This saves me a lot of frustration and headache, however it usually r...

Wrap your leg in plastic film, god the horror if our leg hair would get stuck in the plaster.
Get someone to help you.
I believe you should be standing in a neutral, normal, relaxed pose.
Have a beer or two available and someting to keep you occupied while it dries.
Have fun.

Thats my bad, I linked from a webhost I no longer have. All the missing images are rubbish anyway and not vital. The advice given in the thread about how an arm should fit and how the shape should be is what I believe is of value for you in this project.

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Interesting. When the gothic style dies out and the 16th century takes over, the gauntlets get a wrapping cuff but still leaves a big gap at the wrist. This gap then gets smaller and smaller as we go deeper into the 16th century until the gauntlets pretty much cover the whole hand with lames over th...

I believe that is what most people do. They are in such a hurry to produce something that they forget about planning and understanding what they are doing. Unfortunately most people never get past this stage. That is why we still see helmets with symmetrical skulls being pushed out by everyone.

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Since the gauntlets I've seen of the gothic style seem to only have a one part cuff and the vambraces are short to allow the gauntlet to sit close to the arm, is the inside of the wrist left exposed or was it covered by maille? If maille, wouldn't that require that cuff and vambraces is made larger ...

So there is a curve to the edge of greaves? How does that work with the hinges? Edit: Looking at Wades greaves I see the line. It kinda follow some sort of line along the leg that makes sense but it is not straight. It will be interesting to study greaves once I reach that part of my current projects.

I must disagree to an extent. Using other peoples patterns can be a good exercise and a good start when you are trying to pattern something that you havent done before. It all depends on what level you are at. You could try to build from a pattern as a learning experience then redo it or make your o...

A visor that opens up and stay there allow you to still move around and turn your head and fight with it up. One that opens to the side would swing around, slam shut and open constantly, hook into things and give you neck issues because of the weight tilting the helmet sideways. I can only imagine s...
