Re: Bascinet of the Wallce A69 bascinet?

I think the whole helmets proportions are super funky. It appears massively tall and the eye slots seem to go really far away from the face. But again, I have not given bascinets much of my time.

Re: Bascinet of the Wallce A69 bascinet?

According to Mac, I believe you still need to tilt the visor more to get the eye slots more or less horizontal. http://cache.wists.com/thumbnails/2/fd/2fdd7954d4913732b659381c9ac42e55-orig I believe this picture shows a better tilt of the helmet. But dont trust me, bascinets aren't really my thing. ...

Re: John Leverick arms

There are many interesting things going on here I believe. I think that his inside out brigandine is very interesting. The striped things on his forearm is also interesting. I see no maille or anything similar to the forearms anywhere else. The plates on his torso seem to extend all the way out unde...

Re: Panzerhosen

I agree with sewing channels and then stick the plates inside the channels. I do like the "brick" pattern even though making them lined up would be a lot faster by first making channels, then stick in a row of plates, sew a straight line across, another row of plates, etc..

Re: Making a pattern for a 16th century gauntlet

Looking at my first pattern attempt and my current one, I feel I have gotten very far. This is someting you dont realize when you have no reference of how you did things before. It feels good to have past mistakes saved in a place like this to go back and look at and realize that progress has been m...

Re: John Leverick arms

I would assume that we see maille coming out from under a surcoat. The gauntlets remind me of the Wisby gauntlets with the splinted cuff. Interesting to see the plates on the outside and not covered in leather like most people make the Wisby ones. What I assume being maille could as well be somethin...

And some more angles... 5.jpg 4.jpg Once I am done with this project, I was thinking I should share the patterns, profiles and all the things I have done wrong (and hopefully the things I have learned are right to do) and a pictorial of how I go along patterning and building these gauntlets. I hope ...

Re: Making a pattern for a 16th century gauntlet

Life is now allowing me to spend some time with this project again. I have looked at probably thousands of pictures of gauntlets, checking out details and shapes and lines and attempting to get a pattern I am happy with for a few different gauntlets. After my last side step with a more advanced kind...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs

Are they just for the edge so you don't need any with rivets? I use my #5 JR punch to make washers but I really need to get one of those bench mounted punches with some different dies. It appears they are very practical for a lot of things.

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs

With the strap on the outside of the maille, I would place the buckle at the edge and overlap front to back. With overlap back to front, I would put the strap inside the maille.

Where is that great painting that show a collar like this in detail again?

Re: Leather armour in art? (brown with metal strips & rivets

The lames look odd to me. I would not say leather by the look of them but it is very hard to say. Are there any examples of painted lames? I would expect the paint to come off a lame very quickly so painting them would not be a very lasting solution. I would expect that metal lames with a knee cop l...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs

The straps and buckles have to be on the outside so you can get to them. Take a moment to make up a little diagram and you will see what I mean. I was thinking that you just put the strap end on the inside of the maille and make sure the distance to the buckle is far enough. Buckle stays where it i...

How much curve should I aim for in the lames? If I make a straight line between the rivet holes on each lame I currently measure about 13mm from the line to the edge of the lame.

Re: Looking for a picture of covered greaves

I am assuming they have thin metal strips inside the rivet lines. It looks as if there is a leather strap under the rivets, perhaps sort of a wear and tear piece that can easily be replaced? The gold colored bottom edge, would that be metal or just paint? I still wonder about the poleyn and knee lam...

After some hammering on my first pattern and reading all the comments in this thread, all advice given is now cystal clear to me. Re: Leather armour in art? (brown with metal strips & rivets

The gilded knee puzzles me. It appears to have lames that are red wich to me indicates leather (covering lames in fabric seems like a no-no) and it only has one large rivet on the side. Is it a floating knee with leather straps holding it together or is it riveted to an internal leather knee? Just o...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs

I picked up a vice like that from a garage sale a while back. Pretty handy tool to have.

Would it be wrong to rivet the straps on the inside of the maille? I believe it would give a smoother appearance to the collar? The strap could perhaps even be sewn to the lining and held in place with a rivet..
