One thing to remember is that many people from around the world are not that good at english and not familiar to different medias netiquette. This can cause all kinds of communication problems. I know this very well because of my limitations when it comes to the english language.

Re: Forming late period gauntlets

After very close inspection I see that the lames are flat. Super flat. Almost as flat as a hand hammered piece ever could be made. This means that the hammerwork on modern sheet must be done very lightly so that it doesn't get too much of a curve. I am guessing this is the key to get the right droop...

Re: carbon steel sheet in Europe?

If you can get 4130, go for it. It is available in sheet from companies selling aircraft equipment. We have one company selling it here in Sweden but I believe they import it from the US and it is very expensive. Many armourers get c45, usually from germany and you need to order large quantities to ...

Re: Forming late period gauntlets

I picked these because of the whole thumb base cover instead of the more common hinged thumb. It has an interesting and pleasing form. (But your A-224 is a very sexy beast). I am trying to develop a good method of making gauntlets of similar style and as a learning project. I did a hand cast that I ...

Clecos are not available here so I have nerver used them. I'll use rivet instead of screws. It has been suggested that I rivet the pinky side then finish the forming of the lames before doing the holes on the thumb side.

Re: Forming late period gauntlets

I have also done gauntlets by rough shaping everything then make the holes and use screws to hold them together, then beat them over a ball. This does not produce the shape I am after on a gauntlet like this. Also, the machine screws get deformed and does not stay tight when I start hammering the la...

The gauntlets I am working on are based on these:

Not a simple task but I believe my pattern is on the right path. I am curious to know how others would tackle a piece like this.

Forming late period gauntlets

I have picked up a project I put down some time ago and the time we spent apart has given me some insights. However, I am curious to know how people who make late period gauntlets composed of many pieces go about in the process. I am considering riveting all the pieces from the wrist to the knuckles...

Re: Danish archer recreating historical archery

I must partially disagree in a way. This kind of martial art training is very much for combat. When training martial arts on a higher level you use playful exercises to raise the bar and excel in your art. Playing is the best way to improve. When it comes down to a real life situation more primitive...

I was thinking that the same must apply to blackening armour. I know a lot of people seem to use chemical compounds for blackening these days but I appreciate classic lineseed blackening.

Is that a good way to carry a mail shirt?
Can you check the quality of mail by turning it inside out?
Would you be super awesome with a mail shirt over your harness?

I find it interesting that the two lads in the middle has four lame elbows on their right arms and only two lames on their left.

Something I just thought of is why all the evidence I have seen of maille pieces like these seem to be square cut at the edges. For example around the armpit, would it not make sense to follow the edge of the breastplate with a reasonable over(under?)lap?

I would say both.

The OA torch is awesome to use for spot heating wich is almost nessecary when doing more complex things and shapes. A propane forge is good for heating larger areas and is a good work horse for "big" forming.

Re: Raising tall combs on helmets

I do not believe they did tall comb, one piece helmets from thin sheet either, it takes too much work to do it. I think the multiple piece helmets from this period are a quick and easy way to produce a helmet from sheet and they had an alternative method for producing one piece helmets. Do you have ...
