Re: Shield trade for bling armouring work proposal.
I would bling the crap out of your gear for one of those shields. Only problem is you would have to get the stuff over to Sweden or get me over to wherever you are 8) I could of course make the bling if you provide me with patterns and a preference of what type of bling you are after. Would love to ...

Re: Pneumatic power hammer
I want a hammer for armouring, not forging. I am thinking of a power driven raising hammer more or less. Question is if the anvil could have an S curve to allow raising of helmets. I want to use it for rough forming to save body, mind and soul and do fine shaping by hand. I have an idea I will put o...

Re: Spun tops as helmet blanks?
Mac, I hear you. I have found a local professional company doing spinning jobs and I will contact them for a quote. Hot spinning looks awesome and would require not so heavy machinery. However, I am not thrilled about super hot metal spinning around at super high speeds with me present in the same r...

Re: Thun Sketchbook Image #44 discussion
Is there a weak faded line between the gorget and the little thingie or is that just a damage in the paper? Also, I am missing an arm piece and some legs. Are they on the next page or just not present at all? The golden flower on the pauldron looks to be right at the holes where the points should be...

Re: Pneumatic power hammer
So, I looked at some pictures and the construction is really simple. I was not able to find a cheap source for an air motor but I do have an electric motor that could work for the application. It even has a foot petal if I remember correctly. Now I just need some steel parts that can be turned into ...

Pneumatic power hammer
I have been thinking about building a power hammer of some sort. I have access to a 2.1 cubic meter/minute compressor and I was thinking that perhaps it would be a simple task to make a pneumatic power hammer since the power source would be taken care of that way. Ideas, suggestions, sources for mat...

When googling I found some pictures of helmets that are on display in the Colosseum. However, no information about them, only some pictures.
Can anyone tell me anything about this helmet:

Re: A tale of two elbows (Late 16th century, floating)
I would like to recommend polyurethane foam for casting. Taxidermists use a hand mixed kind that could be used. It is strong enough to keep the form and it can be strengthened with different resins if needed and it can easily be carved and sanded if needed. You can cast a body part, then match the c...

Re: Spun tops as helmet blanks?
150 USD is a reasonable price. If the metal would be 4130 it would be a great price.
The use of a torch to hot spin the metal is really interesting, I really need to get a lathe.

Responding to Jeff, I believe the use of modern shoes with thick soles causes us to walk in a different manner then back then. This makes our leg muscles, amongst other things, develop in a different way. I took up barefoot running a couple of years back and there is a significant difference in how ...

Re: Spun tops as helmet blanks?
Mac, they are not nasty, they are awesome. They just deserve a thread of their own.
Signo, that is an interesting idea, it would require welding at the top and I fear the top would be very thick? I am looking for a way of not weld so the spun blank is still my focus.

Re: Spun tops as helmet blanks?
Shooo, go away! I bet there will be a Dart Welder helmet thread you all can lurk in! I have looked at some clips where people spin steel discs on a regular wood lathe. I am seriously considering investing in a used lathe of the beefier kind. It would require modifications to to helmet sized discs an...

Re: Spun tops as helmet blanks?
Mac, what about if the "square" on the second one would be 25x25cm? There is no reason to make a generic preform too small. The reshaping of it will require it to be trimmed all over anyway so no lets not cheap out on the height.

Re: Spun tops as helmet blanks?
I was thinking more like the second one. A point should not be hard to raise from a rounded skull top so making a pointy blank seems a bit over the top unless the price would be the same. I am guessing one standard would be the cheapest alternative for small quantity orders. I was also thinking in t...

Re: Spun tops as helmet blanks?
Sooo.. trying to get back to the topic, there is the matter of the size, shape and thickness of the blank. Thickness would be decided by the thinning caused by the spinning process but my initial guess would be around 2,5mm. I am thinking an extended hemisphere that could be turned into bascinets, b...

Spun tops as helmet blanks?
I have been thinking about faster ways of producing helmets without welding and I have considered fixing a group order for "helmet blanks". Rough shaped buckets that could be hot worked into nice helmets. One option is to get pressed pieces but I looked in to making spun blanks with a lathe. Would i...

I think they are only slits in the garment so you can put your hands inside to keep them warm. Someone can probably verify this with some solid arguments and evidence. I just "know" it from word of mouth.
