Re: 1050 alloys cost/ source in EU
Nice, looks very promising. 4130 seems to only be available in 2mm thickness. C45 in 1mm. Need to give them a ring I think.

Is there any reason why the rivets holding the vambrace in place could not be sliding, allowing sideways rotation?

Ah, of course. What goes in the hole, a bolt or pin or something? Is the reinforcement being held by only one little rivet/pin/bolt?

So, looking at some more spanish gauntlets i found this.

Anyone who can tell me what the hole at the wrist on the left gauntlet is for? I assume the function to be the same on the Charles V gaunts.

Re: Looking for pictures of Charles V garniture gauntlets
rightgaunt.jpg I god this picture from the pdf, showing the right gauntlet in a bit more detail. There is something to be seen on the inside of the hand that looks almost like a hinge placed over the meaty part of the thumb. There is also something that appears to be frayed threads hanging there. I...

That image was actually very helpful. Now a few more from different angles and I would be a very happy camper. The book mentioned seem to have a few nice pictures of the garniture and the lovely people at the Met provides us with the book as a pdf. Need to get on my computer to check it out. http://...

Re: Question on Using Canvas
I would imagine that applying a drop of glue of some kind on the canvas, then push the nail trough would keep any broken thread from going anywhere if this is a concern. I have not done this myself and I am known of over doing things in general. I use roofing nails for this application and I have ne...

Re: Need help understanding this 16th century harness.
Henrik You need to come to your sences and realize that the 16th century is the one true century. There is so much sexiness to appreciate from 16th century armour. I personally like a lot of the "odd" pieces that aren't the "mainstream" 16th century pieces. Now I will post some random links and pict...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
I am working on some gauntlets at the moment and I actually cut the lames a couple of days ago swearing over it and thinking about this technique. I have been thinking about this method since I saw Wade mention it in a gorget thread and it should be perfect for all the little lames on a late period ...

The plackart edge looks like an ancestor to roped edges. Sort of the caveman of roping if you ignore the fact that the sections alter between a convex and a concave shape.

Re: Making a pattern for a 16th century gauntlet
I usually use a mechanical pencil, either 0.5 or 0.7mm. I have about 20 of them. They are all either out of lead or broken. I have just been too busy (lazy?) to get new ones or led for the ones I have. The No.2 is a temporary solution. However, when I move into my house, I will get a nice drawing ta...

Time to bring out the welder
Does it affect the result if you anneal the piece before you harden it? Will that minimize the risk of cracks and deformation during the quench?

So, since I was not happy with the result, I went back to basics, training drawing during my spare time for about a week. I did some basic drawing tutorials I found online, mostly eye training, learning how to look at the negative space and forcing myself to draw what I see, not what my mind thinks ...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
Mac I understand your fluting lines better now with the gorget in place. The plackart flutes sort of transition to the gorget and the side flutes align with the gorget flutes. This is an elegant solution for the added gorget. I am sure you will, but mount the gorget in place on the breastplate when ...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
To me it looks like the inner most flute on the side aligns with the flute above the flour de lis so they follow eachother in under the shoulder. This is more apparent on the statues right shoulder (left on the picture). I would have guessed that the side flutes and the top flute would align and end...

Re: How does a Peascod breastplate fit?
I think the followup question here is; How should the backplate fit?
My idea is that the backplate should be pretty tightly fitted all over with just enough room to allow muscles and shoulders to move. Am I somewhat correct in my assumption?

Sounds more like 4130 if it has just some rust resistance.
I would first try to harden it and see what happens. If hardening works, then play with tempering.
