I must say I prefer what you did to the poleyns compared to the original ones on the statue but I am curious about the shape of the vertical flute on them. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-DkMq7krqTas/UwzR-EIvj5I/AAAAAAAACmU/EaQkw4vnFn4/s400/SDC19914.JPG On this pic, they seem to have a curve to t...

Ernst It looks very similar to the heels in this picture http://armourinart.com/media/cache/armourinart.com/original/149_large.jpg On the picture of the kneeling man, it appears to be a rivet on the side of the heel. On the person in the back, no such rivet can be seen. What troubles me is that it l...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs
This thread just keeps getting better. It is silly how simple "tricks" can help so much. It is always the things that are so simple that you never, ever think of them that helps you the most. The concept of thinning the edge before rolling is fantastic. I would never, ever think of it myself. I also...

Is it possible to get parts in 4130 from RFTH? Currently after breast and backplates, poleyns and couters. If yes, then what price are we talking about?

Re: Making a pattern for a 16th century gauntlet
I redid the sketch but I am far from happy with it. I tried to draw the side view bent to see the "droop" and I modified the angle on the left picture. Problem I have is to make it line up with how my hand is built but I think that when the knuckle is formed, things will fall into place better. My l...

Re: Making a pattern for a 16th century gauntlet
I made a quick sketch of how I imagine the shape. Sort of. It usually never matches when I start shaping the metal but I think thats mostly because my drawing skills are pretty bad. When I hammer, I just put the piece on my hand and see how it fits as I go. I am sure there is a better way of doing i...

Re: Making a pattern for a 16th century gauntlet
Wade Thank you for chipping in. I agree with you about the pattern. I strive for the "organic" feel in the pieces I work and I will trim and modify every piece again and again once I start working in metal so the pattern will change completely. I just dont feel confident in my skills to guess how th...

Re: what do we know about late 14th and early 15th c. Sabato
I have been looking at effigys and artwork and I cant help thinking that the heel is a separate piece that the spur is integrated with and is being held on by the strap that goes around the foot. I can see this in many, many effigys and brasses and in artwork, but it is hard to say if there is more ...

Re: Making a pattern for a 16th century gauntlet
Mac I usually shape the lames, then punch the holes on the side of the lames that go over the other lame first before fiddling around and marking the holes on the lower lame. Then I punch the lower lame hole. I usually cut the lames a bit too wide and then just use an angle grinder with a flap disc ...

10.jpg 11.jpg I have been thinking of getting some thin thermoplastic that can be worked a bit with some heat and actually holds the shape after forming. I then get another piece of paper, put it over my current pattern and trace each piece separately, adding what I believe is the correct amount on top of each lame, the part that goes under the next lame. 4.jpg This creates my rough pattern that I then cut out and trace on some cardboard. 5.jpg I cut...

I would forget about 1050 and go for 4130, or 25CrMo4 as it is called in EU. I have only been able to find it in sheet from airplane supply stores. You can have better luck searching for 25CrMo4 or even SS2225 (Swedish standard name) then the AISI number.

I am working on pretty much exactly the same setup but I made a "bucket" out of 2mm mild and I will insulate it with kaowool. Remember the dangers of heating galvanized metal.. I own one of these and I can tell you this: Yes, it can shape metal in a way similar to raising, however, it is not strong enough to work much more then 1mm mild and the frame gets in your way. With some serious modification I think it could work pretty well. I have shaped metal without any offsetti...

I have thought about this several times. Today, a lot of people all over the world pick up hammers and starts to attempt armouring. Most with little or no knowledge, guidance or reference pieces. This produces a lot of "armour" with various quality. As soon as a "fake" armour is discussed, I cant he...
