Recommended thickness and material for lamellar plates

So, I have the opportunity to get a bunch of lamellar plates laser (?) cut thanks to one of my contacts. I have never ever done any research on lamellar since I mostly do 16th century stuff so I need to do some research. 1. Will the cutting anneal the plates or could I get hardened steel sheets? 2. ...

I have found 9260 in coils, 600mm wide and 1mm thick. However, the price is about the double then 1050.

9260 & 5160 steel alloy for armour?

Would either 9260 or 5160 steel be suitable for armouring? I know that when it comes to swords, the 9260 silicone alloy is supposedly a lot more shock resistant then 1050/1060 swords. Does anyone have any experience with these alloys?

When in Rome..

I am going to Rome in November for a work conference and I was planning to fit in some sightseeing. What should I do, where should I go? Any particular armour porn I shouldn't miss? I will be there around 16-21 of November, plus/minus a day or two.

My idea was more like the visor on a bellows sallet.

A visor that covers the face and leaves an eye slot over it.

I think I see a visor that covers the face and goes down leaving a gap over it, between the helmet skull and the visor. However, this is just me guessing.

Re: we need a warning area

I have experience from other forums where they have a section with posts with a users forum name and people can write reviews about dealings you have with a user, both buying from and selling to.

If there is a thread with the user you deal with, you post in that. If there isnt one, you make one.

I would change the top angle of the cheek plates if possible. They should be at an angle following the brim line, not horizontal like yours, thats what makes it smell armet I think. Something to consider.

Re: Polishing & Etching vs. hardening and tempering

I usually finish with a 400 or 600 grit, go over it with a fine scrub pad then buff with a buffing compound and a sisal wheel before wiping it with a dry rag, then hit it with a wax treatment.

I assume that stopping after the 400 grit sandpaper is what I should do?

Polishing & Etching vs. hardening and tempering

I am switching over to only working with "spring steel" in the near future and I wonder a few things. What finish should the pieces have before hardening? Planished, rough sanded or fine sanded? Is it a lot difference in buffing up hardened steel compared to mild? Also, I currently do electro etchin...

Plaster cast your body, fill with polyurethane foam or other material and suddenly you have a dummy of your body you can ship to your armourer.

I have been thinking about lacing a piece of leather to these holes to prevent the breastplate to rub against the gorget for less rattling and to get the breastplate forward to allow better arm movement.

Here is one example courtesy of Mr. Allen http://www.allenantiques.com/images/A-46-sides.jpg As you see it extends all the way down to the cuff. Shortening it does help, however they did have them long so the question is if they did not worry about mobility that way back in the days. The problem is ...

16th century gauntlet mobility AKA stupid thumb wing thingie

So, I am making patterns for some 16th century gauntlets and I am currently working out the thumb. I have done some prototyping and it seems like the little "wing" covering the base of the thumb gets in the way for wrist mobility when tilting the hand "upwards" (trying to put your thumb opposite you...
