Great, now to my followup question. What style of gorget would be appropriate with that helmet and the breastplate style i posted?

I found this painting, dated 1509. However, not much of the actual breastplate can be seen on it.

The breastplate it would be paired with would be similar to this one:

How would the gorget setup look like to work with that breastplate and helmet?

Bringing a sallet into the 16th century

I am looking at the possibility to take this helmet: http://www.bestarmour.com/helmets/sallet_20c.jpg And modify it to work with a early 16th century breastplate (1510-ish) without altering the skull piece. My thoughts so far is to change the neck piece and the visor and turn it into some kind of cl...

Re: What patterns do people want to see in a pattern archive

I would like to see more historical patterns instead of the standard SCA stuff. Also, drawings of profiles and such for historical helmets and other parts would be awesome. Things like the bascinet drawings Mac did with the "historical" vs "modern" theme is fantastic and could be a good way of helpi...

You could try finding 25CrMoS4 as an alternative. I have been able to find it available from airplane part suppliers as it seems to be the steel of choice for constructing airplanes.

It could be an idea to make a digital copy available for streaming for those of us in places of the world where the shipping would cost more then the dvd. I would be happy to pay for a digital copy.

How to attatch besagews? [Completed, with Pics!]

So, I am making some custom fantasy besagews for a guy and I was thinking about how to make a simple solution for him to attatch them to his armour. I assume he has no armouring skills or experience so it has to be a simple way. The besagews will be made out of an 1mm brass plate riveted to a 1mm mi...

These tools are your best friend for finding the perfect articulation points: http://rustning.se/Media/Default/Verktyg/artikulering_c-klamma.jpg You drill the holes in the visor, then just clamp it in place and move it around until you are satisfied. For a helmet, you would need a tool like this tha...

2 New helmets (work in progress)

Here are two new helmets, they are still both work in progress and needs some modifications to be finished. I estimate they are at 50% completion at the moment. Some of you might recognize the design on these puppies. The pictures are too big to display so I had to link to them. http://www.rustning....

Here are some more pics of helmet front and bevor, inside pics and details of the reinforced eye slot. I will get the weight of it when I have access to a scale but it is pretty much the same weight as any other SCA helmet I have had. Not too heavy and not too light. http://rustning.se/Media/Default...

Bevor is separate. Thickness of metal suprises me since we usually have 1.5 or 2mm over here but the skull is thicker then 2mm and I think the neck is thicker then 1.5. Might be made from gauge thickness steel but its a very, very, very solid helm. The edges on the visor and brim is reinforced and i...

Stainless sallet with bevor and brass bling (SCA)

I have a stainless sallet that I have never used and I will probably never use it. It has a leather suspension in it and fits my 58cm head. It will probably fit anyone with a smaller head then mine. Re: Math question for helmet sizing

For circumference of a circle, the diameter multiplied by pi is the formula, to reverse it, circumference divided into pi is what you need. Take your head circumference and devide it by pi. This gives you the diameter. Devide diameter by pi then add padding thickness x 2 then take the new number and...

I am afraid you are quite wrong. What you called the "holes" were just cuts on the waist lame made to make it simpler to close the breast and backplate. No additional plates or belts. To me it looks like that belt would go under the breastplate, then another belt with protective side plates would be worn over both the back- and frontplate.

Wandering off-topic from the Death painting discussion, could plausible that some kind of belt/belts were worn partially on the inside and the outside, coming out of the hole in the sides? Like a belt that you strap on your backplate with before you put on your breastplate? This could perhaps let yo...

Why is death wearing cheapo armour? I mean, he's Death.. Holes in the side of 16th century breastplates?

I have noticed that on some 16th century breast- and backplates have a cut out section in the waist that seems to leave a hole in the side of the armour. Can anyone explain this? There is also a...
