Or you could try going ahead and putting a metal band around the edge. There are at least some interpretations of the bits and pieces of such shields that have been found that believe they used a metal rim.

Do you think that would bring it all back to the "damages the rattan" issue?

I don't think a routered edge of a wooden shield would cause any more damage to rattan that the aluminum bucklers with rolled edges and Vitus' "Hard as a rock" fibergl...

Viking Round Edge Ideas?

(EDIT: Intended use is SCA) I've been wanting to make a somewhat good looking bare-wood viking round lately... and I've been contemplating edge ideas. I don't want to cover it with leather or hose, or anything like that. And, I don't want to cover it all with fiberglass or canvas... I want it simple...

Hugo, you could cover up alot of the fugly inherant in that helm.

Paint it, and make a torse and mantle for it. That would be a really cheap way to make it look just a bit better.

Review: Mad Matt Shield Boss

I bought a shield boss from Mad Matt.

It is exactly as pictured on the website, solid, and symetrical.

I ordered it shortly before christmass, and it arrived before christmass.

Perfect transaction.

Then fight with it for a while... Say... a couple years... Before you start experimenting with crazy SCA verisions of Aztec weapons?

I can think of one way.

By not trying to educate the public at large...

Why come up with a new set of rules for something that you can already do within the framework of the...
