You did it wrong. Un-sew it from the leather, and when you sew it back, make sure more of the circumpherence is sewn to the leather, and less are left in the front. Which will tighten it up, and it will hang better.

I have it on good authority that the Black Prince used a 24"x36" aluminum heater as his tourney shield.

In circles the circumference is pie (3.14) times the diameter.

3.14x6= 18.84"

A 6" diameter Circle like that will fit a 17" neck with just a smidge of padding.
