I like it, Josh! Is it comfortable and convenient to have your head so far forward inside of the great bascinet? I imagine it's good for vision but it looks like your chin will sit really close to the bottom of the visor.

A well-earned bump for you, Alexander! Lovely armour... What sort of chest measurements are we considering here? The armour fits very nicely on the model in the photos. What are his measurements, and what is the thickness of that gambeson? Cheers!

Re: Modern Individualism vs. Accurate Portrayals
Ernst, If you look at photos from large European reenactment events, a majority of the participants on battlefields are typically lightly armed and appear to be portraying regular soldiers. I think it's the American "knight in shining armor" concept and strong sense of individualism here that create...

Hey Sean, It's really not too heavy at all - I don't have any way of measuring it exactly right now, but it seems to be weigh less than a mug full of water that I have handy. Certainly less than a kilogram. I personally suspect that the originals would have been made in a shop where standards were t...

Classical Greek Quiver
Hello folks, I finally finished a long-term project for my friend Giannis Kadoglou, a discerning reenactor and my gracious host during a late summer I spent in Thrace in 2014. It is a classical Greek quiver, with construction inspired primarily by the Piraeus Artemis B statue housed in Athens, and p...

Re: glueing leather with hide glue?
How tightly bonded were the pieces of leather when you applied the glue? Did you clamp them securely? How long did you let them sit? Without good clamps and some patience, any decent glue applied to leather or wood is likely to come to naught. If you find the hide glue not up to snuff even after cla...

Weird, I can click the link just fine. Look up "medieval shoe Museum of London" on Google Images. It comes up a few rows down. Photo shows three shoes - the one in the middle has punch work decoration.

Re: Greek/Roman greave measurement question?
The coverage of archaic and classical Greek greaves changed over the centuries. They went from essentially not covering the knee at all to complete covering it. If you're looking for full-coverage, I would suggest you inspect photographs of reenactors wearing quality reproduction greaves and also st...

A floating limb harness is just one where the individual components (greave-poleyn-cuisse or vambrace-couter-rerebrace) are not fixed to one another via something like a lame or integral riveted strap. They might be pointed together with laces or buckled straps or held individually onto the garments...

Hidden means that Doug couldn't see what form of armour it was because it was beneath the knee-length surcoat that was popular at the time and appears in much of the art and effigies. You still need to choose some form or another. I would suggested splinted cuisses based on the rest of the kit. Chee...

It's the same harness, Mark. First photo is without the coat worn in the next two. If you're referring to the second photo in the first post, that's an original light field armour housed in Glasgow, dated c. 1505-10.

Re: Which helmets would go with this armor historically?
I rather forgot what sort of helm he used with that harness. In fact that reproduction is a close helm (or close armet - can't see the front) and the original helmet with the cuirass in the Glasgow collection is a complex sallet.

Re: Which helmets would go with this armor historically?
Maybe you'd be interested in a more open-face helmet, like a cervellies or black sallet, or a heavy cavalry helmet like an armet or close helm. However, such helmets do not match the nature of this light field harness - a complex sallet like the original is the best historical option to match the fu...

Re: Which helmets would go with this armor historically?
Well, the complex sallets that are on both of those harnesses (the reproduction in the first picture is based on the original in the second) are a pretty good bet. It's a German light-cavalry style armour and sallets were still the thing at that time and place. We're talking roughly 1500-1510 for th...

What sort of analysis do you think is worth conducting on the cards from an art history perspective? Did the previous publications not seem to be discerning about the artistic significance attached to their early date, or the styles and motifs on the cards? Curious to see where this would be heading...
