Re: looking for good pics of round faced bascinet, 1410ish

I'm assuming you mean one of this sort, a grand or great bascinet as I've seen them called? I'm not an expert with this style but it was obviously very common in the early fifteenth century in Western Europe, though it was still being transitioned towards as a dominant form in 1410. This one's from ...

Looking for Horse Hair

Hello folks,

I'm looking to buy enough horse hair to fill two Greek crest boxes. I suspect that I'll need quite a bit, and am not adverse to any colors if the price is right; though white, brown and red are my preferences. Cheers, and happy new year to all!

Re: Woven leather strips for armor idea.

It's popular with someone down in southern California to make woven leather cuirasses with reinforced kidney protection of hardened leather 'plates'. Didn't seem like it would be too protective but it probably took the sting out of most but the stoutest blows.

Re: Playing card

Very neat looking, Jester! What's the inspiration for the design/motif work on this? Have you other designs already made up for a set? I've still failed to find much more information on late medieval cards since we last discussed the topic. Pity... Would still love to draw some up!

Page 52, completely surrounding the lion. The tacks are lacking within areas clearly marked by deterioration, suggesting their similar fate over the past several hundred years, methinks. They are also very finely placed along the perimeter, suggesting their original setting by the artist. If we have...

Re: Crafting An (Mostly) Historical Heater Shield

Kel, 'Tis honestly one of the steps that I feel needs more research done, either by translating Kohlmorgen efficiently or else finding someone with access to some of these original shields still. For now I'm fine with a bit of tacking because I know that there are photos that clearly show tacks plac...

Re: Great Helms depicted in the Manesse Codex

As far as can be told, the same sorts that the article below is all about (in particular the Dargen and Madeln finds). Almost all existing continental helms dated between 1275-1325 bear a number of resemblances to helms depicted in the Codex Manesse. It's important to consider that the book was like...

Re: Crafting An (Mostly) Historical Heater Shield

Johann, I haven't pondered sewing the rawhide pieces together because I've yet to run across any period documentation for the technique. As I stared at Kohlmorgen's photos of the backs of some of the shields, as well as the fronts where raised motifs were applied, the use of tacks became the most ob...

Re: Crafting An (Mostly) Historical Heater Shield

Ernst, I didn't weigh it, but it seemed to be well under ten pounds. Scott remarked that it weighed "two pounds less than any shield he's had." Will have to find out what it weighs from him! Thomas, Ha! I reckon it would be a bit more roundabout than all that. Ancient sources were absolutely used fo...

Crafting An (Mostly) Historical Heater Shield

Crafting An (Mostly) Historic Heater Shield I would like to thank Scott, whose shield comes to life in the following essay. As the patron of what was arguably an experimental project, he was patient and respectful throughout the duration of the shield's construction, which encountered numerous setb...

Re: What the ****. Check Your Can!

I just wound up putting two more coats of paint on it. Then, after actually doing some research, decided to use acrylic fixative (aerosol) on the front. The paint is homemade egg tempera, but it (at least as I'm making it) shares many attributes of its viscosity with acrylic and both are water based...

Recently completed shield. It's not in the owner's hands yet, so I am not going to give many details. An essay on its construction will be posted in D&C - it comprises mostly original materials (milk glue, tempera paint, linden planks, rawhide, etc). http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7436/10565125793_54...

Most of the good books on Medieval Germany that are in/have been translated to English are, alas, going to focus on the period between 1000-1250. You're actually looking exactly at a period of German history that's very under-developed in Anglo-American studies. -Benjamin Arnold's Medieval Germany, ...

I have 106 Osprey titles. 18 of them were purchased used and are on the Napoleonic Era, and I have one about trench warfare.
