Re: The evolution of armour - Dissertation research
Sounds like the stuff some people have spent their whole lives digging into... But, considering it's a dissertation, I reckon you're expecting to do at least enough research to get a solid grasp of the subject. I would suggest narrowing it to a particular field - by choosing a region, form of armor ...

Re: new helmet (in progress)
Historically there's no evidence to support the double-plated structure on the sides and back of the helm. I'd suggest forgoing that part and just make single plates overlap. Lookin' forward to seeing your progress.

With all due respect, that suit looks very joust-worthy -> except for the helmet. Except that it was made specifically for Henry VIII for tournament on foot, and would be next to impossible to mount a horse in considering the entire body is covered in plate: including the buttocks and groin. http:/...

Randall, the horned helmet is pretty good, but I've seen no period source that depicts a helmet with more than two horns. Hello folks, A few AA members are keenly interested in Bronze Age arms and armor, but we don't talk about it much over here since there's another forum ( The Bronze Age Center ) where we can discuss ancient topics. One of the members at the BAC, who I do not believe frequents this site, has been kee...

Richard,
I love the gallery page. It was always frustrating having to maneuver between so many small pages on the old site. The new clarity and ease of seeing all of the helmets at once really is excellent.

These are very beautiful pieces, but the prices are a bit steep compared to the competition, or are at least not very competitive. Craftsmen such as those at Lorifactor and Leo Todeschini at Tod's Stuff can do full belts, even with double-sewn leather and lots of enameling and such for this kind of ...

So we see armourers and embroiderers being the same men, which were separate from the King's tailors. A testimony to the widespread use of embroidery among the garments of warriors, whatever the function may have been. That's what I'd reckon, at least... And it's only some forty years after the exa...

Re: How were arms applied to a surcoat?
In the example I mentioned, Griffin, the idea was that King Louis had obviously spent too much money on the embroidered surcoats and that he should have been satisfied with applique. I reckon embroidery would be the most laborious and costly process, while applique and painting would be significantl...

Re: How were arms applied to a surcoat?
By the mid-13th century both applique and embroidery were reasonable. Jean de Joinville describes a scene during which the French King (Louis IX) is reprimanded for using embroidery for the application of the royal arms on his and his attending mens' civil surcoats, rather than being content with ap...

I suppose I should have amped-up my sarcasm button on the bitch slap message. I would never slap anyone, even if it were socially acceptable. I was just trying to get my angle across... i.e. such nonchalant attitudes towards the 'historical' guidelines of the SCA really, really irk me.

Re: We're Gonna Get Dwarf-Wannabes This Season
I can't believe this has actually devolved into an argument about whether it would be legitimate to portray a fictitious dwarf character in the SCA. It is against the rules. It should not be considered, even if someone wants to walk onto the field in $10,000 of custom made "dwarf" armor. It is not i...

Freiman, Pliny mentions the use of milk glue as early as the first century CE. There are a number of later anecdotes referring to its use and others in the Medieval period. Here's a nice article on the subject.

Dan, it does resemble some of the sculptures from the period depicting warriors, although I dare say many of the details were probably fanciful due to the nature of the presentations. Note particularly the similarities in the decorated pauldrons and composite greaves on the last figure. http://uploa...

Holy wow! That's pretty epic. Who made this armor, if I may ask? I love the history of the Tang dynasty, but oddly haven't studied much of their military history; were there any wars being fought in the period that this armor is from? Thanks very much for sharing, 'n cheers!

I typically use 4-5 oz. vegetable tanned leather for armor strapping and belts, or other items that take stress from use. For smaller sorts of straps and lacing projects usually 2-3 oz. will suffice.

You'd need a kidney belt to protect your kidneys, which are most vulnerable from the back. This armor set does not provide back protection at all - the mail is not included, and is also not sufficient protection for the kidneys in SCA combat anyway (rigid protection is required). The bazubands do no...

I don't think the pricing is high at all.
