Re: Full etched western armor coming..
Lookin' good, Michael. I'd suggest that you guys do some more research on surviving etched Western European armor. These designs look like what you do on your Eastern stuff, and don't stand out as being appropriate for the type of armor you're applying it to. Also, it wasn't popular to etch armor in...

Re: Jolly Knight- Review
I've commissioned two custom gambesons and a custom helmet from Alexander in the past. A second helmet is in the works. The first helmet obviously was not going to fit me as snugly as I'd suggested, so he was happy to keep it and offer me a full refund or new piece to use my deposit with; that's whe...

I'm also reckoning that right around this time we should expect a transition to aketons that aren't nearly as thick as their 13th century counterparts probably were. With the development of all of the plate defenses that you're obviously incorporating into the mix, the ability to lessen the concussi...

Very interesting! Re: Late Fourteenth Century Arming Garments I: Caps
Yeah, if Sean's interested in wearing a mail coif, it makes sense that a garment would lay between the head and the mail, as prior tradition shows us. If the idea is the wear a padded coif right under a bascinet, this might be overkill on the padding department, but still can't be considered folly. ...

I know the draw of eastern armourers but I only put my money in reputable armourers pockets. A pretty harsh statement. There are a number of excellent Eastern European armorers that do top notch work and are as honest as any other human being. Typically, they'll do it for less than their American o...

"The Doors of Moria' - Carved Leather Piece - SOLD!
Hello folks, This is a 10.5x6.5" leather copy of Tolkien's illustration of the "Doors of Moria," which was first published in The Fellowship of the Ring and featured in the Peter Jackson film by the same name. The illustration was hand drawn (not traced) and carved into the leather for a very perman...

Re: Wisby helmet - reconstructed from what?
Yeah, it's typically in the later pages of the codex that you see those round-topped helms. I've seen more conservative dates for its completion range, though - sometimes not going past the 1320s. I don't think there are any solid dates for the entries in the codex besides some scribal notes at the ...

What do we think about the 1320 date for this helm? I've been eying it for reenactment purposes. 1320 would be just about right for me, although I can't help but think it looks a couple decades later than that. The way the eye slots are formed, particularly, is a technique I can't think of on any ot...

As a runner, I used to have a bad habit of allowing myself to be 'water logged.' Since I've realized more about the dangers, it's not hard to simmer down on the intake, thankfully! Definitely use glue, because the more surface area that's literally touching together the more vibration dampening you'll achieve. Rivets would look good but make it pretty hard to change out the material if it got old 'n nasty during use!

Lookin' sharp! Cover the back in leather or felt to reduce the ringing. In wood they were typically composite pieces made from several planks set at sharp angles and then planed down to the desired shape.

What historical information does it provide with this image? Looks like it's from the second half of the fourteenth century, although I reckon it could be a bit later based on the style of the lettering... Just guessing, though. Really interested in further information.

Well, it seems you need to start with the history of the period before you get into material culture. Your belief that it was a period of immense change is really not on the money. It would be easy to argue in favor of many different centuries - even within the Medieval period (such as the tenth or ...
