Could be any number of explanations. I'd look in to a combination of money and shift in the composition of armies as the primary reason, if I were researching it. Easier to equip larger numbers of inexpensive troops with a basket hilted sword that can be left in an armory rather than trying to fit g...

It's likely to be a bit pricey, but Anshelm does spring up to 10ga. (For when you REALLY need to stop that shotgun round with your helm...)

Re: Which Arms?
Along the same lines would a klap visor bascinet (round/globose visor, not the conical one) work with it as well? Splinted arms, without articulation on the elbows and bascinet with bretache and aventail for that "I just threw my great helm off" 1350ish look. And maille. http://upload.wik...

The College being what it is, cannot catch fire. Individual members can, but not the College as an entity. No, but I can think of a couple of events where you can catch a large number of them at once... But I still push for our Templar Torchlight Tourneys to be fought with real Templar torches. The...

Why a clergyman or monk from Ireland could move around Europe and European religious houses. I'm going to guess that most laymen in 14th century Ireland didn't speak German or French. Maybe some English depending on who they actually were. French is actually more likely, since the Anglo-Normans wou...

Well....you've got various parts of the sword. There's the blade itself, and the tang which continues from the widest part of the sword where it meets the guard, and tapers towards the far end to the tang. A hole would be drilled/cut in the guard to allow the tang to slip through. You'd then add the...

That actually gives you a little more to work with. Sligo and Leitrim (next county over) from the early 14th century to the last quarter of the 14th C. had a pretty regular feud between one of the O'Rourke septs and one of the O'Connor septs, with the O'Rourkes eventually driving the O'Connors in to...

You have bone on bone? That's pretty much the only reason to my knowledge they'll replace'em. It doesn't look like a fun surgery or rehab, had a fella at work have both of his replaced, and his rehab looked painful. Not yet, but it'll get there (or, rather, not much...the left leg went first, and i...

Here's a cutaway diagram from Albion's web site on how they do it.
There's a few different ways to do it that amount to personal preference and/or engineering knowledge, but that should give you somewhere to start.

Oh - I think it's best I get off crutches as soon as possible. I am a complete hazard on them. We discovered this when I broke my leg. Heheh. I can see that happening to someone. My biggest problem was just that my knee did (and still does) shift unexpectedly on me, but the rapier training has help...

Between now and the surgery I am going to hit the stationary bike pretty religiously and try to keep the musculature built up. I have a recumbent bike, and it doesn't seem to bother it at all. I only tore the medial and lateral ligaments once on each leg, but the only exercise the doctor would let ...

Is that the sort of thing you're after? Not quite, but I'm bookmarking that so I can make the pre-1585 Essex trained bands uniform mandelion. Thanks! I'd seen that picture, but never the pattern and instructions for it. Here's a quick example, as worn by the targetiers from Philip Sidney's funeral ...

I also believe it's absurd to force a Society whose period of study spans 1000 years and most of the world to conform to a set of rules that were only available for a few hundred years within that span. Just because you didn't have the decency to be from a civilized time period doesn't mean you hav...

Cassock/dutch cloak pattern
So, not being terribly good at working up patterns from "scratch", I'm looking to make a few dutch cloaks for something that would resemble English trained bands circa 1585. Not doing LH, it doesn't need to be exact. I know Reconstructing History has a post-1600 cassock pattern, which has ...

Whoops. Misread the choice of time period, based on later posts, and only realized it when I saw on of your posts elsewhere. Same logic still applies, though you're not as far in to the Anglo-Irish going native in the late 14th C. If you want to push for 1400, I'll shoot you some pics of the Irish b...

Short answer is no. You really need to read some Irish history. I may have a spare copy of a book to send you if I come across it. Ireland by this point in time is generally divided into 3 populations. Irish, Anglo-Irish and English. The King of England was the Lord of Ireland and as such almost ev...
