The hilt is not ideal for some Silver techiniques: I don't recommend trying guardant with a sword without knuckle bow, let alone a basket. It's better suited for Bolognese. In usage, for me, guardia di testa and true guardant end up looking nearly alike from the motion of the parry/redoubled cut. S...

Re: What sword should I buy to do Silver in C&T?

The Hanwei practical mortuary sword tempted me until I saw that the blade is only 31", far too small for Silver. First off, I'm going to suggest you pick up a practical sidesword from Therion (pictured above) if you're trying to save money. There were a variety of hilt styles in use at the tim...

Yes, but it's useful to forewarn the potential user who may not be aware of it, along with the warning for their opponents about the difference in feel for drawcuts.

If only we were talking about a Zen Warrior product, Alejandro would be all over it, regardless of behavior in the wild. Scott's already got a disclaimer on his site about the weaker foible. The ones I've seen haven't broken, but they WILL take a bend to them. As far as behavior during combat, the a...

ass wraps and stuff like that are ok though? The mechanics of and the actual shot of the wrap can be found in several places throughout period manuals. The wrap, as it exists in the SCA, occurs in the fashion it does because we lack grappling. Meyer's dussack has an awesome wrap on the pass that hi...

Might be cheaper, at the prices you're getting, to make a friend who sews, or learn to yourself, and then buy a bunch of similar-looking lamellar plates from Polar Bear Forge and sew them inside a garment yourself. It costs time, sure, but could bring the cost back down to the $300-500 range for the...

While a historical form is not a requirement to play, we are finding that those medieval guys knew what they were talking about so everyone leans toward the manuals at some point. Meyer's work on the dusack is one of the best things that has ever happened to what meager skill I had with a one-hande...

The next question is, 'Is rapier a sideshow'. For many of my friends, it's the whole game - as far as combat goes, at least. The same thing comes up in rapier combat, though...as I started doing more WMA, standard rapier got boring, and there are a lot of elements to the game that reward sport-ment...

Does this leave a place for the WMA approach in the SCA? If so, is that place anything more than a sideshow? Is the WMA approach in the SCA solely a thing done on the rapier/cut-and-thrust field (and rapier in the SCA has its own set of authenticity issues...)? Or should people interested in armore...

There are shots I can throw in the sport armor that are simply not possible in a full 15th C arm harness. There are body mechanics and movements in a kidney plated gambeson under a tabard that do not work in a 15th C italian breastplate with faulds. It's not even shot mechanics, either. If you look...
