If you are just looking to be legal, and not worried about aesthetics, what I have seen done is to take the face grill off a hockey helmet and attach it to the back of a regular fencing mask. Ugly, but dirt cheap. Two youth soccer shinguards can be tied together to act the same. Or a piece of wet l...

With respect, I'm skeptical of these "period/non-vibram turn shoes are better" claims - I'm perfectly willing to be wrong however. Anyone youtube videos out there that supports it? There are some things that may change parts of your fighting style, depending on how you stand and move. Ste...

Re: Rough Draft Crown Tournament Shield Law

Historial Exception - For heavily armored living history quality kits without bar grills these restrictions can be waived at the discretion of the Crown. Approval prior to the tournament is strongly recommended. I'd remove the bar-grill requirement. There are examples of cultures in period that wou...

I've got one of the full-size splinted kidney belts, and if you've got the money to pick one up, they're worth it.

I've taken some shots that have dented the belt without me feeling anything other than a standard good shot. (The dents come out fairly easily, too. :))

Meyer's Art of Combat, translated by Forgeng. m Marc de Arundel has used it as somewhat of a basis for his longsword combat style, and the dussack section contains at least one example of pretty much every "standard" SCA shot or combo I've seen so far. (Admittedly, my experience is limited.)

The youth are trained in the style in a safe manner. That style being based on what is viewed as pragmatic for the time. It took it's field level technique and codified it and educated it in a safe way. Certainly Meyer's ideal, but if he's writing that specifically, it means that the majority of th...

The techniques vary for region to region and are not something we would have seen on the battlefield of the ancients. I disagree with this, Li. Catch me at an event some time, and I'll talk about Meyer's dussack, and the movements we have in the SCA that parallel Meyer's fechtbuch. It's not 100%, b...

Or left over with a dagger. Possible, but not with a 48" blank -- I'd only have 10" of scrap, and even allowing only 6" for hilt and 1" for guard, that only leaves me with 3" of blade. Somehow, I suspect that wouldn't look like a particularly well-balanced weapon ... AoC Ca...

They're still pretty "common" here in the Outlands. Not everyone uses them, but you can expect to see a couple at every event/tournament, including Crown.
