Looking for the huge. Any and all examples, pretty much. I know it's a huge range of time, but I'm trying to find out what combos were most common when in the 14th. England, HRE, and Iberian peninsula. I don't even know if it was used in the Iberian. Anybody have links for effigies from the IB and H...

I wasn't being a troll. . (I don't know what that actually means) It means: acting deliberately obtuse just to piss people off Now, before any hackles get rising, she said she assumes you're NOT being a troll and that your questions are, as you said, genuine. This is, in fact Medieval/Renaissance r...

Spaulderoid? I like that word. Seriously. That's a sweet way of describing that type of arm. I've always had trouble explaing that.

Thanks for the link, Gavin. Does anyone know of a site like that or Gothic Eye for HRE effigies? These are exceedingly useful, but I'd like to know more about HRE as well. No fighting, guys. Gavin's right, floating or articulated isn't the issue. The issue is, the type of elbows used with knees that...

Those are nice, Stefhan. Are they steel or aluminum? And can you do something more cruciform? Something that wouldn't have the balls on the tips, like something more square-ish?

Not looking for much hypothosis. We have these knees in effigies that we often refer to as soupcans. In this thread, the assumption should be that they are floating. Again, not hypothoosizing on thier construction. Then, what do the effigies show from 1300 to 1399 as far as what sorts of elbows are ...

Not interested in the big picture in this thread. Strictly 14thC this time out. If it evolved after 1399, then it is too far down the line for the scope of this question. Most of this thread has been about armour decades later than what I'm asking about. The forum is about the big picture, my little...

Actually, if we could just bring the whole thread back to the 14thC, it would really help me a lot. The original question: The so-called "soupcans" (by which I mean the style depicted on d'Aubernon and de Burs, et al)- which for the sake of this thread, I would like to proceed as if they a...

Metal Sword Hilts For rattan

Who makes more historical looking, non-basket hilt hlits? I know Windrose/Mandrake does, but who else? Regular crossguards/cruciform hilts. Not looking for Landsknecht or anything.

Actually oak is cheaper around here. A 1/4"x2'x4' piece of oak ply is about $8, as opposed to about $11 for the birch. Since I plan to cover it in canvas, the less porous nature of the birch isn't terribly important to the finished look, I wouldn't think. You get the smoothest finish oak can gi...

I'm still a bit curious about wood types, tho. Why does everyone seem to prefer birch to oak? I can see it if you're not covering it with hide or canvas, but isn't oak stronger? I know it doesn't cost quite as much. Also, what kind of bolt is best to use? A carriage bolt would be easy, but I dunno i...

Soupcan Knees and Elbows

Were soucan knees wore more commonly with articulated elbows, soupcans, or floating pointy elbows?

And what was the main range of usage decades-wise?

Adric, do you have any pics of your shield? I'm not really understanding about all the small strips of canvas, as opposed to a sheet that just covers the sield face and wraps over the edges. Winterborne, do you have any closeups from your shoulders up? I'm thinking about doing a fabric camil/aventail, whichever it is, and it would be most helpful to see a real live example. Well, canvas covering a round shouldn't be too hard. Make a ring of canvas bigger than your shield with a hole in the middle the middle hole should be the same diameter as the hole for your hand. glue it down and do the edges like everyone else does, just rivet thru the canvas. You may not want to g...

Making a Shield

I just spent the last couple hours rummaging thru old posts on shields. I want to make an edgeless heater. Why? I agree with the idea that edging typically looks like ass. I may go with covered rope on a practice shield, but I Now what I ran across was some good stuff, however, much of it is a coupl...

You can get Titebond 3 at Wal Mart Lowes, or any place like that. It's about the best easily available wood glue out there.

By thinning it out, it soaks thru the leather, and then when it hardens, it really hardens. Good stuff.

I wouldn't worry too much about getting it under the maille. Like Carlyle said, a CoP is acceptable at least as far back as the middle 13th. Just make suer you wear a surcote over it. It'll hide the plastic, and be correct to wear over a CoP and maille.
